SUMMARY: The Associate Behavioral Health Clinician (ABHC) is an integral member of the primary health care team, providing assessment, referral, treatment, support, education and skills-training focused on addressing specific behavioral health needs to improve physical, psychological and social health. The ABHC is a pre-licensed behavioral health professional serving patients while obtaining hours toward professional licensure. As a part of the primary care team, working with physicians; advanced practice practitioners; nurses, medical assistants and case managers, the ABHC works to motivate patients to overcome personal barriers toward treatment plan adherence, healthy choices, accessing needed resources, and self-responsibility and management. This position will be required to sign a service agreement and agree to a commitment to work at Open Door after completion of successful hours and licensing requirements as outlined in the service agreement.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The essential responsibilities are conducted within the context of collaboration and coordination with patients, primary care teams and other behavioral health professionals. Patient visits occur through scheduled appointments and immediate “warm hand-offs” as appropriate.

  • Collaborate and assist medical practitioners and other health care team members in recognizing and treating emotional, behavioral, mental health, and substance use disorders.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with Open Door Community Health Centers (ODCHC) case managers to address insecurities, social supports and services, available benefits, and other social needs.
  • Work with individuals or groups to provide brief, solution-focused, goal-oriented assessments and interventions to address mental health, behavioral health and co-morbid conditions; provide and support patient education, self-care and self-management strategies.
  • Evaluate and refer at-risk patients to the continuum of care available within ODCHC and in the community, including long-term counseling and therapy, substance use treatment, and psychiatric assessment and medication management.
  • Accurately record psychological and behavioral health histories, assessments, interviews, care plans, session/visit notes and referrals in the electronic health record (EHR) according to protocol.
  • Contribute positively to the efficiency, accessibility, productivity, quality, safety, compassion and professionalism of the work setting.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as identified and assigned by the Clinician Manager and Director of Behavioral Health.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS:

 

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish constructive professional working relationships among a diverse workforce and patient population.
  • Experience providing social work, counseling and/or behavioral health services preferred.
  • Experience in a health care setting preferred.
  • Ability to remain calm and work toward de-escalation and resolution in difficult, confrontation, and crisis situations.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply professional journals, policies, procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, tolerate interruptions and shift focus quickly.
  • Ability to use computers and learn ODCHC software applications.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and objectivity.
  • Adhere to ODCHC’s policies and procedures.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or Counseling.
  • Previous experience in Community Health preferred but not required.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Registered with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences as an Associate Clinical Social Worker (ASW) or Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT).
  • Current CPR certification.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The ABHC has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

SUPERVISION AND SUPPORT: The ABHC is expected to participate in case conferences with clinical supervisors and other members of the ODCHC behavioral health team for feedback, education and support. ABHCs work in various ODCHC clinics and are considered part of the larger behavioral health program at ODCHC. Day-to-day logistical issues are supervised by clinic site administrators and the Health Resources Manager. The ABHC is required to participate in ongoing group and individual supervision with the clinical supervisor as outlined by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences according to licensure requirements. The ABHC is expected to document supervised hours and remain current with the appropriate licensing protocols of the California Board of Behavioral Sciences for their specific degree.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This is largely an office-based position. The physical requirements described are representative of those needed to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.   • Ability to remain stationary for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to use keyboard and view computer screens for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to travel locally and long-distance.
  • Ability to move around offices and clinics as needed.
