ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
As Controller, you are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day management of accounting functions including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Payroll, and the month-end general ledger close. Month-end close includes reviewing and approving reconciliations prepared by direct reports as well as a general review of the transactions occurring during the month to ensure proper reporting. This position provides leadership to and supervision of the accounting staff to ensure accurate and timely completion of routine accounting and payroll duties. Additional responsibilities include: maintaining/updating the accounting policies and procedures manual; developing and maintaining internal controls to ensure compliance with approved policies and external requirements, and identifying opportunities for improved controls, efficiencies and effectiveness; and overseeing the annual audit process as well as the completion of annual financial reporting (i.e., the 990, 1099s, etc.) and all payroll tax returns with the support of contracted vendors.
General Accounting Management
Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, reinforce financial controls and ensure consistent and documented practices to assure annual unqualified audit
Oversee month end close of general ledger and reconciliation of bank accounts.
Prepare/review periodic reconciliations of balance sheet accounts.
Coordinate the year-end audit and the preparation of the Form 990.
Oversee account reconciliations for programs funded by public and private foundation grants
Program/Department Accounting
Ensure that Health & Wellness membership, Early Childhood Education enrollment, Racial Justice consulting and other earned revenues are reconciled weekly & monthly;
Oversee billing and collections, and the establishment of allowances and write offs when necessary;
Complete accurate and timely financial and statistical reports for Department leadership
Review revenue deferral and receivable accounts and inventory reconciliations on a quarterly basis.
Provide data to Health & Wellness Department leadership to support their timely response to membership-related complaints, inquiries and special requests.
Support compliance with USDA program requirements.
Accounts Payable
Oversee the accounts payable process.
Work with program staff to improve efficiency and effectiveness of purchasing processes.
Review the issuance of 1099s.
Payroll
Supervise and act as backup to payroll accountant in processing regular and commission payroll.
Review quarterly and year-end payroll tax returns and issuance of W-2s and ACA annual returns as completed by vendor
Oversee bi-weekly and monthly reconciliation of benefits withholdings and payments
Relationship Management:
Work closely with Finance Manager, Organizational Advancement, and department supervisors to ensure accurate and timely financial information is provided to funding agencies and that the accounting for restricted contributions/grants is accurate.
Educate and coach YWCA staff in the use of financial information to manage programs, departments and funding.
Staff Development
Recruit, hire, orient, train and coach direct reports.
Establish performance standards and facilitate staff development learning opportunities.
Maintain intra-department cross-training.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. CPA or MBA preferred.
Experience
Four years of successful supervisory experience.
Four years’ experience in financial management and reporting
Not-for-profit experience preferred
Other required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and knowledge of Nonprofit Accounting Reporting Standards
Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
High proficiency with computerized accounting systems and computer software
