The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

The Temporary Lighting Technician is responsible for the safe handling and installation of lighting equipment for the Museum’s various departments, with an emphasis on the Exhibition Design & Production department. You will be working with multiple teams such as AV, Fabrication, Art Handlers, Registrar, Conservation, among others. 

You Will:

  • Hang and focus lights.
  • Prep, install, deinstall, maintenance & troubleshooting equipment and systems.
  • Build and test prototypes or proofs-of-concept for Museum exhibits and displays.
  • Update inventory and organize storage spaces for lighting.
  • Update lighting paperwork such as Vectorworks and Lightwright.
  • Openly receive feedback on safe practices when working around art.
  • Have duties primarily for the Exhibitions Design & Production department, with potential support for other departments such as Theaters, Base Building, and/or Special Events.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Proficient understanding of different lighting equipment (architectural preferred but not a must) such as track lighting systems, PAR cans, ellipsoidals, filters, gobos, lenses, dimming systems, etc.
  • Experience hanging & focusing lights at heights ranging from 10’ to 25’ safely and comfortably.
  • Electronic and electrical skills such as soldering, wiring, testing cables, and electronic components.
  • Experience operating tools & equipment for carpentry; metal shop; and paint.
  • Competency in reading electrical drawings, light plots, and Lightwright documents.
  • Ability to thoroughly troubleshoot complex systems and clearly report them.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with fellow staff to follow the Museum’s protocols, particularly when working with or around art.
  • Proficiency with basic Microsoft software (e.g., Word, Excel) and Outlook (email & calendar).
  • Flexibility to work after hours and weekends.

Physical Requirements:

  • Intermittent walking, sitting, and standing.
  • Move and transport up to 50 lbs.
  • Safely move ladders and driving lifts around art objects.

The expected base hourly wage range for this role is $25 to $31. The actual base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
