JOB DESCRIPTION: The PET/nuclear medicine technologist performs a variety of specialized PET  imaging procedures and adheres to patient safety protocols. Technologist operates imaging equipment, prepares rooms for exams, and maintains equipment, supplies, and medications. Reads, understands, and responds to detailed oral and written instructions. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. The employee provides direct patient care to patients of all ages and contributes to the efficient operation of the department, ensuring the quality and continuity of patient care while maintaining patient flow, assisting with or performing procedures as ordered and completing appropriate documentation. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff, and the public at large. Interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures to general duties. Demonstrate clinical competence and expertise in the direct care of patients and families. Has a high commitment to quality patient care.

JOB DUTIES:

The following description of job responsibilities and standards is intended to reflect the major responsibilities and duties of the job, but is not intended to describe minor duties or other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.

  • Under direction of the Radiologist, the PET/nuclear medicine technologist performs a variety of technical procedures applying ionizing radiation to demonstrate cross-sectional anatomy for the purpose of detecting pathology.
  • The PET/ nuclear medicine technologist performs procedures utilizing PET/CT scan table, gantry, and computer console equipment.
  • Functions using independent judgment, initiative, and ingenuity when performing technical procedures.
  • Manages and monitors equipment used to acquire cross sectional images.
  • Develops and organizes diagnostic quality cat scans prior to giving them to the radiologist for interpretation.
  • Requires the ability to work with all age groups of patients and physical conditions, to include pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
 
Position Requirements

JOB KNOWLEDGE: Requires good communication and organization skills, with a working knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, and medications to adequately understand radiologist’s orders. All staff must have ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and ability to communicate medical information correctly and clearly.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • PET/Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification , any combination of Registered Technologist R.T., ARRT (CT), NMTCB and maintain current registration in radiography (R)
  • Current State of California PET/Nuclear Medicine Technologist  License (CRT).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR in adult, child & infant are required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Moderate amount of lifting and positioning of patients and equipment. Position requires ability to constantly lift objects heavier than 30 pounds, perform difficult manipulative skills, walk and stand for prolonged periods. Position requires ability to concentrate on fine detail with constant interruption and attend to tasks for 5 to 30 minutes at a time. Individuals must be able to understand and relate theories behind several related concepts and remember multiple tasks given to self and others over long periods of time.

HOURS: PET/Nuclear medicine technologists work 4/10 Hour shifts, Monday - Friday with variations as assigned by supervisor.
