Description

The Director, Major Gifts is a key member of a growing development team and will be integral in the major donor fundraising program for the food bank. The development team is tasked with raising over $30M in annual gift revenue each year and soliciting support for the food bank’s $50M capital campaign. The ideal candidate will have a robust and proven track record designing and executing development strategies for general fund and capital campaigns, and soliciting a number of seven plus figure gifts, in addition to six and five figure gifts. The candidate will have a strong commitment to the mission and values of Capital Area Food Bank. This is an exempt position and reports to the Senior Director of Development.


Essential Functions:

Donor Engagement and Relationship Management – approx. 70%

  • Utilize fresh thinking to build and advance relationships with a portfolio of leadership-level and major gift-level donors through frequent in person, email and phone engagement, solicitation, and stewardship;

  • Serve as one of the organization’s key gifts strategists impacting $1M+ gifts.

  • Independently identifies, cultivates, and solicits an active portfolio of individual donors and prospects and increases their investment in CAFB’s mission;

  • Develops existing and new relationships by being active in the field, frequently meeting with donors and understanding how we can work together towards shared goals;

  • Oversees research on a segment of potential new donors and proposes strategies to engage them;

  • Increases general fund revenue and drives capital campaign revenue through relationship building, strategic proposals and solicitations, in addition to cold and warm calls and other prospecting efforts;

  • Facilitates planned gifts through advanced conversations with donors regarding long-term goals, assets, and impact

  • Strategically moves donors through the pipeline in a systematic, scalable way;

  • Helps develop and executes appropriate stewardship opportunities for the full spectrum of donors beyond their portfolio, throughout the year;

  • Supports the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship efforts of the CEO and other key food bank staff so that they are properly prepared for each donor interaction. This includes donor profiles, briefing materials, talking points and follow up.

  • Maximize individual giving, matching funds, bequest and legacy giving, and in-kind contributions.

  • Record and pull data using CRM system (currently Salesforce)

Strategy and Leadership – approx. 20%

  • In collaboration with the Senior Director of Development, is a key leader in the integrated individual giving strategy that includes major, mid-level and planned gift fundraising;

  • Meets aggressive annual fundraising goals that grows the breadth and depth of the individual giving program;

  • Responsible for meeting revenue targets for individual donors;

  • Manages a discrete portfolio and has significant knowledge of and input on the portfolios of others who engage with individual donors;

Collaboration – approx. 10%

  • Supports the efforts of Food Bank by collaborating across departments to toward shared goals. This can include working with programs staff to develop greater understanding for the candidate and potential donors about specific programs, the development of collateral with marketing, or advancing partnerships with strategic initiatives, operations, data analytics, finance, the volunteer team, the CEO’s office and more

  • Engages with the Communications team to integrate content into marketing and fundraising activities including advocacy, cultivation, and solicitation.

 
Position Requirements
  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience in fundraising or a closely related area, involving the solicitation of many six- and seven-plus figure gifts;
  • Ability to drive new and existing relationships toward both annual fund support and capital campaign support

  • BA from an accredited college or university, preferred

  • Experience working with sensitive information and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Extensive knowledge of fundraising best practices.

  • Experience building and maintaining relationships, successfully renewing and upgrading support year-over-year

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to relate to donors, volunteers, colleagues, and Institute leadership

  • Self-motivated, innovative, and able to work with considerable independence in a team environment and a network of relationships.

  • Superior written and oral communication, negotiating, organizational, analytical, and fundraising skills, including the ability to interpret financial information and manage data.

  • Familiarity with financial planning, tax, and charitable gift laws, and planned giving vehicles and methods.

  • Meaningful prior experience with donor database/CRM software is required (Salesforce preferred), as well as excellent proficiency with MS Office, especially Word and Excel.

  • The desire to be part of a fast-paced, high-energy, and collaborative team of high-performing and mission-driven development professionals.

Reporting:

  • Reports to the Senior Director of Development

Schedule:

  • Hybrid schedule available
  • Regular work hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm
