Elementary Klallam Language Teacher

OVERVIEW: Under the supervision of the Klallam Language Program grant manager the Elementary Klallam Language Teacher will manage and teach daily Klallam language and culture lessons at the LEKT 1st-6th grade after school and summer school programs, provide cultural assistance during tribal cultural events and also work with Port Angeles School District staff to provide Klallam language, history and culture lessons in the public elementary schools.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: NA

POSITION STATUS: Permanent Full Time

SALARY LEVEL: $20/hour

WORK SCHEDULE: M-F 8-4:30pm

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

  • Manage the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe After School Program 1st-6th during the school year. Provide administrative duties such as creating flyers, advertising to the community, manage enrollment & track attendance as well as operational duties, such as communicate with parents, prepare and teach daily Klallam Language and Culture activities, be responsible for students after school until kids are transported home.
  • Manage the LEKT 1st-6th grade Language & Culture Summer School Program which will work in coordination with other tribal programs to arrange a 4-week summer program schedule. You will provide administrative duties such as creating flyers, advertising to the community, manage enrollment & track attendance, communicate with parents, prepare and teach daily Klallam Language and Culture activities while being responsible for students during specified program hours.
  • Provide Cultural assistance during tribal cultural events, such as, work in coordination with other culture & language program staff and assist during annual events such as canoe journeys, school district potlatch, culture fair, etc.
  • Provide Klallam language, history and culture lessons in the public elementary schools, which includes, communication and planning appropriate lessons and teaching times with teaching staff, create & implement lessons.
  • Meet with tribal elder weekly to consult on Klallam language, history & traditional knowledge and keep a journal of topics discussed. If no time is spent with elder, then weekly time will be spent to transcribe digitized recordings of elder interviews and/or annotating sound files.
  • Attend staff planning meetings as necessary.
  • Continue growth of the Culture Program by initiating innovative ideas for current or new programs for youth and/or adults.
  • Ability to work independently without constant supervision as well as in a group setting.
  • Attend assigned trainings.
  • Be flexible to schedule adjustments as there will be evening and weekend work occasionally.
  • Other related job duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 18 years or older.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Washington State First Peoples’ Language, Culture and Oral Traditions Certification
  • First Aid and Child CPR Card and Food Handler’s Permit within one month of employment.
  • Valid WA State driver’s license and have a good driving record.
  • Pass Criminal History Background check (no felonies, or child related offenses).
  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Drug Free Workplace policies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required by the Position

  • Ability to supervise K-12th grade children while ensuring a safe environment at all times.
  • Ability to establish & maintain effective working relationships with Tribal elders, members, and staff.
  • Good technological and organizational skills.
  • Microsoft Program knowledge (word, office, outlook, excel, power point).
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to work independently, make decisions and maintain program wide goals & priorities.
  • Ability to work within the budget provided by program director.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work involves sitting, standing, walking, lifting, talking, hearing, reading & writing.

As with all positions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe this position is Indian Preference in hiring.
