The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures engages visitors from across the Los Angeles community and around the world with a dynamic range of public programs and education initiatives, providing unique access and insights into movies and moviemaking. With initiatives that reach audiences of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, the museum offers a holistic approach to public engagement that informs and inspires audiences of varying interests, from first-time visitors to aspiring filmmakers.

The Director, Education and Public Engagement plays an essential role in directing and implementing the vision and strategy for these programs, which include, but are not limited to, school and teacher, teen, youth and family, in-gallery, and adult-centered public programs. The Director, Education and Public Engagement also oversees the Shirley Temple Education Studio to implement a wide range of programs.

The position works closely with the Chief Audience Officer as well as many departments across the Academy Museum, Margaret Herrick Library, and Academy Film Archive to conceptualize and implement a diverse range of programs, establishing local, national, and international partnerships. The candidate should have a strong history of collaboration with scholars, historians, artists, and operations professionals.

You Will:

  • Work closely with the Chief Audience Officer and other staff to create the vision and strategy for the development, growth, and sustainability of education and public program initiatives.
  • Oversee and/or coordinate major educational initiatives, including the museum’s teen program, school and teacher programs, and film education workshops as well as collaborations internally and externally.
  • Be responsible for creating and implementing a broad range of public programs, including in-gallery talks, panels, symposia, performances, events, and other public programs.
  • Develop collaborations and partnerships with local, national, and international creative organizations as appropriate for education, programming, and digital initiatives.
  • Implement a pedagogical approach specifically attuned towards needs, assets, and unique characteristics of the Academy Museum, and be able to apply consistently across audience ages, skillsets, and interests.
  • Connect education and public programs to exhibition content and themes and conceptualize innovative and new approaches to build repeat visitors and lifelong learners.
  • Have awareness of museum, education, and film theory best practices and research and be able to contribute to the field(s).
  • Ensure educational and public program goals and programs are inclusive and accessible to audiences of all interests, skills, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Expand the effectiveness and reach of museum education programs by cultivating strategic partnerships with LAUSD and the broader educational community.
  • Work closely with visitor experience staff on the design and training programs for frontline teams.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of education department staff.
  • Be able to effectively communicate the impact, value, and methodologies of educational and public programming efforts to a variety of constituents including internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement evaluation tools to measure, interpret, and analyze the outcomes of education and public programs relative to strategic goals.
  • Assist marketing and fundraising efforts related to education and public programs.
  • Be able to assess resources and assets and determine 1, 3, and 5-year strategic growth of programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the position.
 
Position Requirements

Educational and Experience Preparation: Requires Master's degree in arts education, museum studies, or other related area; 5+ years of professional experience in arts education including curriculum and program design; prior supervisory and budget management experience; proven track record of building education programs or departments; excellent organizational and computer skills; ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others.

Physical & Dexterity Requirements: Sedentary work that involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Occasionally may require lifting 25 pounds, opening boxes or packages, and stretching or reaching. The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, and color perception.

Working Conditions: Staff will work in general office and museum conditions with no known exposure to environmental hazards. Work will require occasional evening and weekend hours consistent with the museum's schedule of events and activities.

Contact with Others: The position involves a significant amount of contact with museum staff, volunteers, and the public. This involves frequent interactions with museum staff, vendors, donors, and other education professionals that may be of a sensitive or confidential nature. Discretion and sound judgment are required. Staff must be able to relate well to individuals with a variety of backgrounds and positively represent the museum in these contacts.

The expected base salary range for this role is $100,000 to $160,000. The actual base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
