This is a limited term assistant position (30 hours a week) beginning in April 2023 through June 2023.

Job Summary

The Metadata & Curatorial Assistant will gain hands-on experience working with an archival collection oral histories with filmmakers, both Academy-recorded and donated and deposited materials. This part-time/temporary role will report to the Director of Oral History Projects and work in consultation with the department’s archivist, providing support for collections management of oral history interviews, and assisting with archival and curatorial duties for the department.

This support includes: data entry, cataloging duties in Axiell Collections/ Rosebud, inventory and pre-cataloging in Airtable, metadata audits, researching relevant and topical clips for outreach initiatives such as the Academy Museum, documentation, and administrative assistance as needed. In addition to the processing, the assistant will have the opportunity to shadow department staff in areas including but not limited to collection management, preservation planning, acquisitions, and more.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Metadata:

  • Assist the Sr. Archivist by creating original descriptive catalog records in Academy systems such as Axiell Collections/Rosebud for Academy-produced interviews, deposited/donated collections, and new acquisitions
  • Maintain internal Airtable databases which facilitate department cataloging and curatorial workflows
  • Provide support for metadata strategy, including policy, workflows and descriptive practices

Curatorial:

  • Assist the Director and Academy Museum staff in curatorial efforts by evaluating interview content (both video and transcripts) for appropriate clips for outreach such as: Museum exhibitions, promotional material, social media, and outreach
  • Prioritize and organize selected clips using Airtable database with contextual information and send lists and correspondence via email
  • Participate in meetings with OHP staff and members of the Museum team to discuss potential clips
  • View content and provide summaries and key terms for project planning and curation
  • Organize and maintain Airtable sublists of curatorial content and reels
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s coursework in archives or associated discipline
  • Experience working with audiovisual and/or oral history collections
  • Experience performing full original cataloging of audiovisual materials
  • Experience curating moving images for use in exhibitions and online
  • Demonstrated understanding of film history and culture
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, problem solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and ability to work creatively and effectively both independently and as a team member

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience cataloging audiovisual materials
  • One or more years of experience with selection and collection development
  • Experience with Airtable or other database systems
  • Knowledge of existing and emerging metadata standards
  • Demonstrated understanding of digital project workflows
  • A working understanding of oral history ethics and best practices

The expected starting hourly range for this role is $21.00. The actual base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
