Description

SAL Community Services (SAL), home to Skip-a-Long Childhood Centers, is the Quad Cities area’s leading provider of early childhood care and education and now includes the Prevention Initiative (PI) program. We provide a safe, secure and supportive environment centered on how playing can charge the mind of the children we care for.

SAL is seeking a Curriculum/Assessment Specialist to oversee the education and early childhood development services of the Prevention Initiative (PI) and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local rules, regulations and contractual requirements. This position provides education resources to teachers/providers and trains, coaches and mentors staff to assure implementing of developmental and cultural best practices centered in nurturing and responsive care in the field of early childhood education.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the professional development plans of the education staff and the contracted partners and providers.
  • Assume management responsibility for the child development and educational program aspects in the Prevention Initiative program, including school readiness, child outcomes and full implementation of the selected curriculum.
  • Develop or update the integrated education and early childhood development plan, policies and procedures for PI in consultation with the PI Director and the Illinois State Board of Education.
  • Review and evaluate child development plans and activities to assure services provided are culturally, linguistically, and developmentally appropriate and inclusive of individual levels of ability, interests and developmental rates.
  • Make regular observations of centers, classrooms and Home Child Care Network homes, to ensure environments both indoors and out are clean, healthy, well-organized and have sufficient developmentally and culturally appropriate materials and planned activities to support progress towards the program goals and objectives.
  • Implement a process of on-going monitoring to ensure developmental screens, ongoing assessment, individualization and lesson planning occurs in accordance with the program’s policies, procedures and timeliness.
  • Establish communication between EHS staff and their counterparts in other child care settings and in the Head Start and other preschool programs including, teachers, social workers and health staff to facilitate smooth, successful transitions and ensure PI children and their families are prepared for school succes.
  • Provide one-on-one training/modeling/assisting on a variety of topics as specifically needed by the HCCN providers and/or child care site teachers.
  • Perform follow-up trainings through demonstration (modeling) with children and/or observing the HCCN providers and/or child care site teachers with children and making suggestions as needed.
  • Complete the Environmental Assessment for each of the HCCN providers and/or child care site teachers, complete summary of finding, and set action plans on an annual basis with assessments submitted to the PI Director for review.
  • Train the HCCN providers and/or child care site teachers on the implementation of the selected curriculum, screening tools, child assessments, individualization, and teaching practices.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled team meetings to plan for and deliver collaborative services across all components.
  • Maintain accurate written records for site/HCCN observations, completed checklists, summary of monitoring visit forms, referrals, follow up visits, and other required forms.
  • Supervise the Family Specialist and the Mental Health Specialist.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in ECE, Elementary Education, or related field plus a minimum of one year related experience is  required
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Must be able to complete physical tasks such as sit, stand, lift 10 pounds
