Since 1971, Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided a comprehensive continuum of high-quality, essential, and community-based services to citizens of the Peninsula who are affected by mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders.
Safe Harbors Program is intended to reduce homelessness by providing housing first. It is also intended to maximize consumers’ opportunities and independence by providing quality supports, training and individualized services to individuals who are homeless who suffer from serious mental illness (SMI) or SMI and co-occurring substance use disorders (SUD). Individuals served must be a single adult who has been homeless for the past year or experienced numerous episodes of homelessness over the year and are not currently engaged in any treatment or community services.
The Adult Residential Counselor performs a variety of functions in support of substance abuse recovery or the psycho-social, community reintegration and/or development of the seriously mentally or emotionally impaired including independent living skills training, pre-vocational and vocational coaching, needs assessments, case management, advocacy, crisis intervention, group therapy, recreational and leisure activities and/or supportive counseling. Monitors and documents client progress.

Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services (Social Work, Psychology or Counseling) and one (1) year of adult clinical mental health experience providing psycho-social development training, crisis intervention, counseling and case management services. Valid Driver’s License.
The selected candidate must successfully pass a criminal history fingerprint background investigation, DMV record check, Child Registry search, drug screening test and employment reference checks.
