Description

CAFB is seeking a Director of Foundation Partnerships. The Director will be a member of the Institutional Partnerships team, tasked with developing and maintaining CAFB’s relationships with a portfolio of professional foundations, and serving as primary relationship manager for several medium- and large-size donors and prospects. This position requires a person skilled in leading foundation fundraising efforts for a large regional social service organization, and negotiating complex relationships both within and outside the organization.  

The Director will lead – in partnership with the Senior Director of Institutional Partnerships, Executive leaders, and Program colleagues – in identifying new funding opportunities for foundation donors around key priorities as identified by CAFB leadership and program experts. The Director will ensure proper stewardship of an existing portfolio of grants, and be expected to identify, qualify, and cultivate new prospects. S/he will be responsible for the entire life cycle of the revenue generation process, including crafting concepts and pitch documents, researching opportunities and conducting grant writing, and managing relationships and all relevant reporting. S/he will be responsible for maintaining and expanding a portfolio of relationships that exceeds $2.5 million, contributing directly to the annual revenue goals of the Institutional Partnerships team. 

 

Essential Functions:

Cultivation and Stewardship – 40%

  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of at least $2.5 million, working with medium- and large-scale foundations in the portfolio. 
  • Work with Senior Director, Institutional Partnerships to engage top 15-20 foundation partners, each contributing in the low to mid six figures annually (and ideally via multi-year agreements); 
  • Cultivate and steward existing partnerships, identifying new areas of alignment to pursue and grow. 
  • Lead collaboration across the organization – but most closely with Program, Regional, Marketing/Communications, and Grants Coordination teams – to conduct all CAFB foundation grant activities, including: 
  • Triaging all inbound traffic to CAFB from professional foundations, 
  • Proposal development and reporting,  
  • Communication, and  
  • Stewardship opportunities. 
  • Contact foundations, pitch ideas, obtain information about upcoming grant opportunities and solicit feedback on CAFB submissions. 
  • Identify new opportunities, organize donor meetings, and contribute to preparing briefing materials for the President and CEO of CAFB and other senior managers as required. 
  • Provide top-quality stewardship to the foundations who invest in CAFB each year. Related responsibilities include providing personalized outreach and invitations to relevant events and experiences (e.g., volunteering, food donations, and Face Hunger workshops). 
  • Ensure that proposals and reports submitted meet the highest quality standards and all donor guidelines. 
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of all grant-related paperwork. 

Portfolio Strategy Development – 20% 

  • Work with the Senior Director of Institutional Partnerships to develop a strategy that effectively engages existing and prospective foundation partners, with a clear vison as to those that can be major, anchor partners of the food bank, generating the largest and most strategic contributions. 
  • In internal partnership with marketing/communications/program/fundraising teams, create compelling pitch documents that effectively communicate to foundation funders the philanthropic benefits associated with supporting current programs as well as early-stage strategic initiatives. 
  • Cultivate a deep understanding of foundation philanthropy. 

Portfolio Management and Planning – 15% 

  • Oversee prospect research for new and existing foundation donors within the portfolio. 
  • Utilize Salesforce to track leads and opportunities and to build and maintain a healthy pipeline of fundraising opportunities. 
  • Accurately project, track, and communicate fundraising progress towards revenue goals.  
  • Work closely with the Gifts Processing team to ensure timely donation processing and prompt acknowledgement of funding secured. 

Persuasive Networking and Communications – 10% 

  • Identify the most promising external opportunities to network and showcase our efforts and impact. 
  • Participate or facilitate participation of other CAFB colleagues in meetings and events to highlight our impact in the community and our innovative approaches to address hunger and food security. 
  • Conduct outreach and present information about professional foundations at various internal fora to increase organizational understanding of foundation priorities and operating procedures. 
  • Successfully represent CAFB in public settings which include meetings with current and potential funders and well-organized, impactful site visits. 

Management & Leadership – 10% 

  • Set goals for the portfolio that align with the CAFB’s budget and strategy, then clearly and consistently communicate goals and expectations to the Senior Director of Institutional Partnerships and other team members. 
  • Support team by effectively managing your workload – planning and prioritizing activities, and developing the structures and tools needed to achieve team goals. 
  • Model the behavior you wish to see in team members. 
  • Energize the people around you, foster engagement and create a trusting atmosphere. 

Miscellaneous 

  • Duties as assigned, to include participating in events, fundraising fairs, and team activities. 
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required; a relevant advanced degree is preferred. 
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant business development, fundraising, or marketing experience. 
  • Experience working with foundations required. 
  • Proficiency with Salesforce donor database (or similar CRM) required.

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to motivate and manage superiors, peers, and external stakeholders to achieve results. 
  • Exceptional persuasive writing skills; ability to translate complex needs into funding proposals that are succinct, clear and compelling. 
  • Strong work ethic with very high attention to detail and excellent and organizational skills. 
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and coordinate multiple projects and relationships. 
  • Stellar follow through responding to internal and external inquiries. 
  • Works well both individually and with a team at all levels of an organization. 
  • Work well under pressure with frequent interruptions, and is able to prioritize changing workloads to meet tight deadlines. 
  • Strong commitment to social justice and genuine desire to serve the Washington metropolitan area. 
  • High integrity and moral character, supporting the mission, philosophy, policies and ideals of the Capital Area Food Bank.

Schedule:

  • Hybrid schedule available
  • Regular work hours are Monday through Friday from 9am to 5:00pm
