Psychology Post-Doctoral Fellowship 

About the Organization Founded in 1996 by parents who sought the very best treatment available to deliver opportunities to children and adolescents living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Minnesota Autism Center (MAC) provides therapeutic services for children ages 18 months to 21 years who have ASD.



MAC's services are center-based and in-home, and include speech and occupational therapy, assessment and diagnosis services, and individual and family therapy. At any given time, MAC serves approximately 370-400 clients throughout Minnesota at 17 centers located in Eagan, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, Fridley, Vadnais Heights, Minnetonka, Woodbury, Duluth, Virginia, Mankato, Rochester, Red Wing, New Ulm, Medford, Hutchinson and Cambridge.



 
Description

The Minnesota Autism Center Postdoctoral Fellowship is a full-time clinical position that prepares trainees for licensure as a psychologist in Minnesota. This involves some required components but allows for flexibility to create the experiences the fellow desires. Founded in a scientist-practitioner model, we have a diverse, passionate group of supervisory clinicians who enjoy training and working with postdoctoral fellows. We are a 501c3 non-profit organization, which provides staff the opportunity to apply for loan forgiveness.

We view the fellowship as an important step of intensive training before independent practice, and we are dedicated to assisting you in this exciting transition. The postdoctoral fellowship is truly the culmination of many years of preparation and hard work and is meant to help prepare you for your first position as a psychologist. We are invested in you as a practicing psychologist and a person, and strive to make this year meaningful, enjoyable, and helpful as you launch your career.

  • Carrying primarily an assessment caseload as defined by clinic (and smaller psychotherapy caseload)
  • Ability and availability to meet clients during times that work for them (typically during our open hours of 8:30am – 4:30pm M-F)
  • Ability to work a 5-day workweek and offer appointment times that work for clients families
  • Ability to provide clinical services to a wide variety of populations and particularly ASD (i.e., ages, populations, diagnoses, etc.) under clinical supervision
  • Ability to conduct supervised practice with children of all ages and their families
  • The provision of clinical services including conducting predominantly diagnostic assessments, psychological evaluations and testing, treatment planning, small caseload of psychotherapy, and discharge planning for patients of the clinic
  • Attending and participating in individual supervision, monthly case consultation, business meetings, and other meetings as required by MAC
  • Providing intermittent didactics within clinic’s training program as assigned
  • Compliance with clinic documentation standards
  • Compliance with licensing board rules, APA Code of Ethics, and DHS regulations and guidelines
  • Maintain professionalism in all interactions with staff, patients, and business associates of clinic
  • Keeping abreast of billing issues and discussing same with patients when necessary
  • Assisting in intermittent peer-reviews of patient files
  • Adherence to directives by applicable direct clinical and administrative supervisors
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements
  • Completion of an APA-accredited doctoral degree in psychology prior to start date
  • A declared licensure track in Minnesota with active pursuit of licensure attainment (full licensure not required)
  • Compliance with respective board rule related to pursuit of licensure
  • Reasonable progress towards licensure attainment
  • Ability and willingness to service patients primarily on an outpatient basis (with some services done in multiple MAC clinic sites as cases demand)
  • Flexibility to meet when patients are available to meet
  • Evidence of a high level of professionalism within the field
  • Strong clinical acumen
  • An expressed interest in working with children and families
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to provide assessment services to children, adolescents, and families
  • Ability to respect diversity and integrate issues of culture into case conceptualizations
  • Ability to engage with patients who may be ambivalent about treatment
  • Ability to adapt interventions to patients’ strengths, skills, and developmental levels
  • Commitment to empowering patients to solve their own problems when necessary
  • Ability to intervene decisively, when necessary, to protect patient safety
  • Ability to set appropriate boundaries and limits for best practice
  • Ability to comply with clinic documentation standards
  • Ability to maintain a full caseload as defined by clinic
