GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Highly responsible administrative and professional work in coordinating and performing fire inspections and plan examinations, while applying the State of Florida Fire Prevention Code on exsisting buildings.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Conduct annual fire inspections of buildings for compliance with applicable fire and life safety codes. Identifies violations of the Florida Fire Prevention Code, County Code of Ordinances, and other applicable rules and regulations and reports defects to the Sumter County Building Services Division. Maintain records and make reports..
  2. Reguarly keeps the Division Chief of Community Risk Reduction informed on the status of annual fire inspections and other fire inspections not provided by the Sumter County Building Services Division.
  3. Conducts inspection of food truck and special events for compliance with fire life safety codes.
  4. Attends continuing education courses, programs, and keeps up to date with codes, laws, and ordinances that apply to annual fire inspections.
  5. May from time to time provide fire and life safety education to the public at special events or other functions.
  6. Review plans, specifications and other data submitted to ensure conformance with the Florida Fire Prevention Code related to change of use in existing structures.
  7. Performs other duties and responsibilities related to fire inspections, fire watch standby, and emergency scene activities as assigned.
  8. . Assure consistency in interpretation of codes among staff members.
  9. In emergency or crisis situations (hurricane, flood, etc.), the position is required to perform reasonable duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
  10. Employees hired on or after February 1, 2016, must be a tobacco-free person, both on and off the job, for at least one (1) Year immediately preceding application and maintain the same tobacco-free status throughout the term of employment.
  11. Face tattoos (from ear to ear and hairline of the forehead to the bottom of the chin) are prohibited.
  12. Maintains regular physical attendance during normal work hours as assigned at one of the County's offices or work facilities to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.

Salary Range - $19.92 to $28.49 Contingent upon qualifications and experience.  Benefits package

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Knowledge of department plans examination, building permitting and inspection policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of fire prevention, suppression and investigation principles, procedures, methods, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of structural, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical construction methods, procedures and materials.
  • Knowledge of the Florida Fire Prevention Code and ordinances relating to construction plan review, permitting and inspections in the County.
  • Knowledge of possible building construction and mechanical compliance issues.
  • Ability to be firm in requiring remedy of building construction compliance issues.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction codes, plans, and specifications.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and necessary reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors and others in the construction trade.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate degree in Fire Sciences, Engineering, Construction, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Two (2) years experience as a Florida Fire Safety Inspector
  • Additional certifications for fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and hood fire suppression systems preferred.

 

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:

 

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License and a driving record acceptable to insurance provider.
  • Florida Certified Fire Safety Inspector 1
  • Must possess or obtain the required National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications within six (6) Months of employment.

 

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:

 

  • Acceptable vision (with or without correction)
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without correction)
  • Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 45 pounds)
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
  • Ability to enter data into a computer.
  • Ability to sit at a desk and view a display screen for extended periods of time.

VACCINATIONS:

  • Tetanus within sixty (60) days of employment

 

ENVIRONMENT CONDITIONS:

 

  • Works inside and outside in varying weather conditions with noise, slippery surfaces, and uneven surfaces.
  • Heights (up to 50 feet)
  • Some stressful situations.
