Academy Museum Getty Marrow Curatorial Intern - Summer 2023 (Gold Rising) 


The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

The Academy Museum is seeking an organized, enthusiastic intern to assist the Curatorial team. The intern will make a critical contribution in research and organization in support of the Museum’s upcoming temporary exhibition Borderlands. Scheduled to open in fall 2025, Borderlands will focus on Chicanx participation in American filmmaking from the silent era through the Chicano film movement (1960s-70s) to today. Under the guidance of an experienced curatorial staff, the intern will gain in-depth experience in preparation and planning for an exhibition that explores a largely marginalized film history for a wide audience.

This is a limited-term internship beginning in June 2023 through August 2023. The hourly wage for this role is $17.

You Will:

  • Be involved in a wide range of curatorial activities, including assisting with exhibition checklists, organizing archival research, and drafting artist biographies.
  • Be a rigorous researcher and strong writer, able to create bibliographies and filmographies, organize image files, and draft and edit research summaries.
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A college degree in progress. Community college, trade school, and university undergraduate students with graduation dates December 2021- June 2024 must be in good academic standing. Students studying film studies, Chicano/a/x studies, ethnic studies, American studies, American history, museum studies, curatorial studies, or related fields are encouraged to apply.
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.8.
  • A strong interest in the motion picture industry.
  • A keen interest in curating, film, writing, and research, as well as a curiosity for underrepresented voices and themes in cinema history.
  • An interest in gaining museum-related experience.
  • Attention to detail and are a critical thinker.
  • Spanish fluency a plus.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit and stand for periods of more than 2 hours and lift up to 25 lbs.


Other Requirements:

  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 is required, including any booster vaccinations as applicable.



This internship is part of the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Program, which encourages greater diversity in the professions related to museums and the visual arts.
