GENERAL PURPOSE AND FOCUS: Part of the ministry of the United Church of Christ is to care for the spiritual life, unity and well-being of the church; to nurture its covenantal life; to guide its pilgrimage as a multiracial, multicultural church, accessible to all; to provide regular processes that focus on theological reflection throughout the church; and to facilitate the visioning, planning, implementation, and coordination of the United Church of Christ’s total mission. The Director of Publishing, Identity and Communications for the United Church of Christ helps shape this ministry through the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the telling of the church’s story, the faithful use of traditional (print, radio, television) and emerging (electronic, web-based and social networking) communication technologies throughout all settings of the church.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Telling the story of the church and its people within and beyond the United Church of Christ, making clear the ways in which the church is engaged in God’s mission.

· Leading a seamless, cross-ministry team (OGM, LCM) that encompasses the church’s historic work in the publishing of books and curricula, lodged in Local Church Ministries, and the denomination’s communications and identity efforts, housed within OGM. 

· Serving as publisher of United Church News, the denomination’s online news service; publisher of the StillSpeaking Magazine, a twice-annual, development publication; and director of publishing for The Pilgrim Press (the nation’s oldest publisher of books) and United Church Press.

· Interpreting the policies and programs of the United Church of Christ.

· Providing leadership to the publishing and product lines of the church, including manuscript acquisition, production, marketing, sales, distribution, and fulfillment of print and digital books, identity products, and other items.

· Supervising electronic ministries within the national setting, especially www.ucc.org and the UCC’s presence on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks.

· Overseeing the church’s storytelling efforts in multiple media formats, including video, print and online mediums.

· Convening a coordinating communications staff that includes PIC team members but others who serve in communication-focused roles in other Covenanted Ministries.

· Working with ecumenical and interfaith partners in amplifying the mainline religious voice in the media.

· Strengthening denominational identity for laity and clergy; supervising the staff of the “God Is Still Speaking” branding/marketing initiative as it becomes integrated into the life of the whole church.

· Developing strategies, alongside the News Director and the Collegium of Officers, for engaging the secular press regarding issues and initiatives that are of concern to the General Synod of the United Church of Christ and in the day-to-day crises and opportunities that may arise.

· Interpreting the work and mission of all of the Covenanted Ministries in local churches, conferences, associations and ecumenical settings.

· The day-to-day personnel administration and management of the Publishing, Identity and Communications Ministry Team, including conducting annual staff evaluations.

· Assisting in the development of an annual budget for the Publishing, Identity and Communications Ministry Team, monitoring it regularly and taking appropriate action when needed.

· Regular reporting of the activities of the Publishing, Identity and Communications Ministry Team to the Collegium of Officers.

· Serving as a member of the Mission Planning Council, as a member of the OGM and LCM leadership teams, and as a member of the Fundraising Team.

·Other duties as assigned by the Associate General Minister or LCM Executive Minister.

 

 

 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

· A college degree in a related field or equivalent experience, or a combination of academic study and experience.

· Graduate level degree in appropriate discipline helpful, but not required.

·Is a person of faith.

·A strong sense of imagination, innovation and creative problem-solving

·Demonstrated competence in communications and publishing, including print, electronic, and video media.

·Ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously.

· Understanding of media policy and the intersection between media and faith.

· Broad knowledge of the United Church of Christ, its diverse theology, traditions, heritage, polity and structure.

· Lay or ordained persons will be considered

· Demonstrated business management skills, including financial management, personnel administration and general business administration.

· Demonstrated leadership style and skills working with a richly diverse staff.

·Excellent written and oral skills. Ability to conceptualize and compose messaging for many different audiences and mediums.

· Ability and willingness to travel approximately 30% of the time.
