Craft Center Instructor Student Manager

 

Definition and Purpose

Under the supervision of the Coordinator – ASI Programs, the Instructor Student Manager is responsible for managing the Instructional classes and Studio needs at the Craft Center including upkeep and maintenance of all tools and safety protocols in each studio. This position oversees a staff of 20-30. This position requires effective communication with staff and participants regarding programs, services, policies, and emergency response.

In order to maximize the Student Manager's personal development and ensure that their experience with ASI is broad-based, they will be assigned additional responsibilities beyond their specific program or staff area.

Educational Requirements and Qualifying Experience

  • Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units. All ASI student staff must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at Cal Poly. Graduate students must carry 4 units/3.0 cumulative GPA at Cal Poly.

  • Knowledge of Windows-based computer systems (Microsoft Office).

  • Must have current First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Knowledge of crafts offered in the Craft Center.
  • Must hold a CA Driver’s License with a driving record acceptable to ASI’s insurance underwriters.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds, specific needs, or limitations.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Train employees in essential duties, customer service, and risk management.
  • Complete weekly administrative duties, including but not limited to service requests, keeping safety protocols up. to date, developing agendas, and conducting regular staff meetings.
  • Directly supervise Craft Center Instructor Staff and assist in disciplinary action.
  • Initiate and/or manage staff coaching, discipline, and feedback for staff area.
  • Participate in leadership development training with immediate supervisor and student manager leadership team.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Abide by and enforce all ASI and campus security regulations regarding confidential and private information.
  • Effectively manage applicable internal and external communication outlets.
  • Ensure all area manuals, procedures and resources are accurate and easily available to staff.
  • Display awareness of all ASI and staff area policies; enforce policies as necessary.
  • Maintain the integrity of the ASI philosophy and brand.
  • Produce regular reports, reviews, and assessments of staff area.
  • Exhibit punctuality and dependability by maintaining a consistent work schedule.
  • Maintain professionalism in the workplace including but not limited to attire, behavior, and language.
  • Maintain familiarity with emergency response protocol.
  • Provide quality customer service to all staff and customers.
  • Maintain a positive work environment through interaction with staff, peers, and superiors.
  • Demonstrate understanding of effective and efficient resource management.
  • Demonstrate understanding and competency of specific technological resources used by staff area.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to other Craft Center Instructors.
  • Conduct inventory of supplies and communicate needs to supervisor.
  • Provide training for new employees.
  • Participate in recruiting new employees.
  • Delegate responsibilities and activities of staff.
  • Evaluate Craft Center front-line employee performance on an annual basis.
  • Work as a team member and liaison with the ASI full-time staff.
  • Encourage and facilitate positive communication between Craft Center staff and management.
  • Awareness of safety and risk management.
  • Review information for the Craft Center website on a quarterly basis and as needed.
  • Manage account procedures in preparation for ASI accounting review, including sales deposits, disbursement authorizations, and purchase order requests.
  • Communicate with vendors.
  • Input Craft Classes into Fusion.
  • Provide quality programming with available funds.
  • In conjunction with supervisor, monitor and regulate all budget disbursements, including payroll.
  • Keep all office and desk files in working order and create new files as needed.

 

Specific Requirements

  • Organize, schedule, and conduct regular staff meetings.
  • Work with instructors to maintain and organize studios.
  • Maintain annual Purchase Orders with vendors for purposes of ordering studio supplies.
  • Manage supply orders for craft studios.
  • Schedule and coordinate quarterly classes and initiate ideas for new classes.
  • Be knowledgeable regarding all tools and function of each studio.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Be familiar with evacuation plan for staff area.
  • Perform desk duties as part of normal office hours.
  • Attend all meetings, workshops, and retreats.
  • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Period of Employment

Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.

 

Compensation and Hours

Pay Rate: $17.50 per hour; 20 hours per week needed (maximum 20 hours per week while enrolled in academic classes). Maximum 35 hours per week when not attending academic classes (summer only).
