Child Care Lead Teacher Toddler

OVERVIEW: . Toddler care requires consistent, sensitive, responsive and nurturing caregivers. Person will be responsible for ensuring a developmentally appropriate childcare program and environment for children 12 months to 30 months of age; and up to 12 years of age; and is responsible for supervision and training of Child Care Assistants. Person will provide all phases of classroom activities, planning, teaching and guiding the children, must be willing to attend local and out of town training when needed for the job.

SUPERVISED BY: Childcare Program Supervisor
POSITION STATUS: Full-time/ 40 hours per week
SALARY LEVEL: $17.23 - $19.25 DOE
WORK SCHEDULE: To Be Determined by Supervisor

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

  • Develop site based goals in a collaborative process with staff and parents;
  • Develop weekly lesson plans with variety of learning experiences with staff input;
  • Prepare individual learning plans including emotional, social, cognitive, and language development with parents input;
  • Nurture and care for children totally dependent upon caregiver to protect them from harm and meet physical, emotional, and intellectual needs. This includes but is not limited to: consistency, comforting, encouraging, feeding, diapering, holding, napping, playing, reading, singing, sensitive interacting and attending to child’s needs.
  • Daily communication and coordination of Toddler care occurs with parents, caregivers, and staff at every drop-off and pick-up of child.
  • Must adhere to individual sleeping and eating patterns and needs of child rather than an adult prescribe time schedule.
  • Assist in serving USDA approved meals and snacks to children. Knowledge of proper serving sizes for infants, toddlers, preschool, and school-age children. Sit with children at meal time and model healthy eating behaviors and good manners.
  • Be familiar with special dietary needs (allergies) and medical issues (asthma, etc..) of children.
  • Plan, develop and maintain a safe, healthy, and attractive learning environment with appropriate activities for indoor and outdoor play;
  • Assist parents and children in transitioning to other classrooms, or programs, such as Head Start, other child care, school;
  • Be familiar with and help implement the DCYF Minimum Licensing Requirements for Child Care Centers;
  • Write objective observations of children, notes to parents and keep accurate documentation and records for Center’s reporting responsibilities;
  • Orient, train and support child care assistants and volunteers;
  • Promote positive parent and community involvement within the organization;
  • Coordinate with the Child Care Program Supervisor in developing and maintaining schedules, training plans, and planning to meet the needs of the children, families, staff and community;
  • Administer medications and first aid in accordance with regulations and policies, and handle emergencies as they arise.
  • Provide supervision and training to Child Care Assistants.
  • Must demonstrate supervisory skills and carry out supervisory responsibilities as needed for entire Child Care Center.

Position Requirements

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have documented child development education or work experience, or complete required STARS training within six months of hire.
  • Must have two (2) years experience in a multi-aged child care facility and/or School Age Program.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Must be able to write and implement curriculum for various developmental ages.
  • Must be able to work independently, make decisions, and maintain program wide goals and priorities.
  • Must pass a Criminal History Background Check prior to hiring along with a DCYF Background Check.
  • Must have First Aid, Adult/Child/Infant CPR, within 30 days of hire:
  • Must have a Food Handler’s Permit, within 30 days of hire.
  • Must have HIV/AIDS Blood Borne Pathogen Training.
  • Must meet STARS requirement and be listed in the STARS Training and Registry System, which includes 20 Basis STARS Hours and 10 continuing STARS hours annually.
  • Must have a physical exam which shows a negative TB skin test.
  • Must have a working home telephone or cell phone.
  • Maintain confidentiality of program information.
  • Must have good personal hygiene and grooming.
  • Valid driver license and insurable driving record

Knowledge, skills and abilities required by the position:

  • Knowledge of Early Childhood programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate workload and complete work assignments;
  • Ability to maintain CONFIDENTIALITY;
  • Ability to comply with TRIBAL policies and procedures;
  • Ability to follow instructions and adhere to prescribed routines and practices; and
  • Excellent communication skills; orally and written
  • Must demonstrate commitment and understanding of the regulations regarding maintenance of potentially sensitive information to meet confidentiality requirements and best practices.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Drug Free Workplace
  • Must pass UA testing prior to employment
  • Must be able to participate in training in area and out of area
  • Must assist in preparing, serving, and cleaning up after meals and snacks
  • Must keep classroom supplies and classroom clean and sanitary following the Minimum Licensing Requirement and LECC Parent Handbook and Health Policies.
  • Must be a team player
  • Must assist in hand washing, face washing, wiping noses, diapering, toilet training duties, changing clothes as needed;
  • Must be able to follow directions and guidelines
  • Must know and use safe work practices.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift and carry children, occasionally up to 50 lbs
  • Must be able to work in a wide range of positions 8 hours per day, including but not limited to squatting, sitting in very little chairs, sitting and getting up off the floor, bending, stooping, standing, walking, running, jumping, chasing, crawling, rocking, holding child sitting and standing, and generally being able to maintain eye contact with children being served.
  • Able to sustain prolonged standing, sitting and walking.
  • The work is performed in the child care center and in an office environment. This includes being able to maintain eye contact, hearing voice conversations, keyboarding, sitting, standing, walking.
  • Ability to clean, sanitize and maintain work area and equipment.
  • Ability to reach over head.
  • Able to lift 50+ pounds or more.
  • Able to focus and be alert to task.

OTHER UNIQUE DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to apply principles of leadership and management in daily practice.
  • Ability to act quickly in emergency situations.
  • Balancing attention to detail with a “bigger picture” perspective.
  • Application of Basic Early Childhood and Social Services Discipline.
  • Must be sensitive to staff, children, and families with allergies in a perfume free environment.
  • Must assist in hand washing, diapering, toileting, and potty training duties, changing clothes as needed.
  • Continuous upgrading of leadership abilities and professional expertise.
  • Maintaining licensing with a culturally appropriate center, including adequate trained staff, appropriate coverage for the ages and needs of individual children being served, and management of scheduling for children and staff.
