POSITION SUMMARY

Opus One Winery is looking for Harvest interns to join us for the 2023 Harvest. The Harvest Lab Intern will be responsible for assisting the Lab Supervisor with all Harvest Lab activities including analysis of berry samples, juice and wine, lab cleanliness, tasting preparations and clean-up. We strive to provide a safe, educational, and enjoyable work environment while learning the day-to-day operations within the lab and wine making process to reach absolute wine quality.

 

This is a temporary position anticipated to commence in mid-August and is anticipated to last for approximately 4 months, subject to harvest conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works closely with the Lab Supervisor
  • Perform wet chemical analyses for juice and wine including Brix, pH, TA, and FSO2
  • Conduct enzymatic analysis of must and wine for RS, ML, Acetic Acid, YAN
  • Set-up/break-down of daily tank tastings throughout harvest
  • Barrel sampling for ML and RS tracking
  • Maintaining cleanliness of Lab space, equipment, and glassware
  • Track chemical inventory and consumable supplies to inform Lab Supervisor when items need to be ordered
  • Assist with daily berry sample analysis as needed
  • Conduct pond sampling for pH and DO weekly
  • Other duties may be assigned
 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must possess a High School diploma
  • Degree in, or pursuing Chemistry, Biology or science related field is preferred.
  • Desire to work in the lab and learn winemaking processes with a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and attention to detail
  • Basic computer skills: Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel preferred
  • Individual must have an interest in science winemaking and possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Opus One Winery

 

Physical ability to perform tasks that may require prolonged standing, sitting, lifting, and other activities necessary to perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Working Conditions/ Hazards:

Work is mainly performed in a Vineyard/Laboratory/Cellar. The individual is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles relative to normal Cellar and Lab processes. Noise levels are usually moderate to loud. Occasionally works near moving machinery parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and toxic or caustic chemicals. Frequently exposed to various weather conditions.

 

SAFETY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Accident prevention is of utmost importance in all phases of job responsibilities.

  • Follow all company policies and procedures including job safety, safety rules and regulations.
  • Assist management to provide safe and healthy working conditions at all times.
  • Immediately report all unsafe conditions, work-related accidents, and illnesses to the Safety Manager and your supervisor.

COMPENSATION: Base Compensation: $21.00 USD hourly
