POSITION TITLE: Wellness Counselor/Mental Health Specialist

SUPERVISED BY: Director of Counseling & Advising, Asst. Principal for Academics

FLSA STATUS: Exempt, Full-Time

EFFECTIVE DATE: August 1, 2023

Position Summary
This position is a full-time, eleven month position. The Wellness Counselor/Mental Health Specialist at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory works with the Counseling and Advising Department and collaborates with the Deans of Students, Administration, and various departments and programs to support the overall health and well-being of students, especially in the area of mental health. The Wellness Counselor focuses on a tiered system of support providing short-term 1:1 counseling, case management and crisis intervention for students in need, coordinating wellness education and mental health resources for students, and coordinating student support groups and wellness leadership opportunities. This position will also provide professional development for peer educators as well as support for parents and families whose students work with the Wellness Counselor.

This is a new position at Sacred Heart Cathedral that will provide greater support for student mental health and wellness. The primary focus for this position initially will be direct student services. The Wellness Counselor will provide short-term intervention to students for social, emotional, or crisis events that may impact their behavior, academic success, physical, or mental well-being. Other aspects of the role will be coordination of programs, services, education, and resources to ensure an overall culture of health and wellness at SHC.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide social, emotional, and mental health support for students through education, counseling support services, and crisis intervention.

  • Develop and implement supports including 1:1 meetings, case management or crisis intervention services through drop-in or appointment.

  • Timely response to student referrals from school counselors and school leadership.

  • Confidential receipt of information from students' medical or mental health professional provider in the interests of continuing support for the student during the school day.

  • Collaborates with faculty, staff, and administration to coordinate support of individual students.

  • Consults with outside mental health providers to coordinate student support.

  • Provide culturally informed counseling, applying various therapeutic strategies for a diverse student population.

  • Coordinates and facilitates regular peer support groups.

  • Provides appropriate referrals for students in need of long-term mental health resources.

  • Assist students and families to navigate and access community mental health resources and referrals including medical, mental health, and emergency care.

  • Effectively coordinate with school counselors, therapists, physicians, and families to support the student during the school year.

  • Communicate and support parents and guardians through referral and educational materials.

  • Build community partnerships and form strategic alliances to expand health and wellness resources and supports for students and families to access.

  • Develop and implement education and support for all students in collaboration with the Counseling and Advising Department and the school administration.

  • Advise school leadership when there is a need for community-wide student or parent education on wellness and/or mental health issues.

  • Participates in planning and delivery of mental health and wellness related programming to students and parents.

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of programming that helps prepare incoming 9th grade students for the transition to high school.

  • Collaborate with and support development of any mental health and/or wellness sections of the PE/Health curriculum and school advisories.

  • Stay current and informed on research related to teen mental and emotional health.

  • Partner with parents/guardians by providing education on health and wellness issues facing teens, sharing resources and referral processes for student support.

  • Regularly provide professional development and educational opportunities to SHC School Counselors and College Advisors on relevant health, mental health, and physical safety issues.

  • Provide mandated reporter training to staff/faculty, assist employees with mandatory reporting to Child Protective Services, if requested, and maintain records of all reports.

  • Actively participate in SHC's strategic initiatives to strengthen meaningful diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging practices, especially strategies to support equitable learning, culturally responsive teaching, social emotional learning, and universal design for learning (as stipulated by the DEIB strategic plan adopted by SHC Board of Regents in 2021)

  • Maintain confidentiality, abiding by California law and clinical licensure, in all matters regarding student health and wellness.

  • Maintain appropriate log notes in PowerSchool for students in accordance with state and federal laws and ethical guidelines.

  • Recognize the importance of timely and effective responses to communication.

  • Perform responsibilities in an organized, accurate, timely, and dependable manner.

Position Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling or Psychology

  • Licensed Ph.D., PsyD, MFT, or LCSW

  • Demonstrate professionalism and integrity, including appropriate boundaries with students, colleagues, parents, and community partners

  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with others

  • Support the academic, co-curricular, and spiritual life of the school community;

Desired Qualifications

  • Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential

  • Experience counseling adolescents

  • Experience in a high school setting

Certifications and/or Licensure
Licensed Ph.D., PsyD, MFT, or LCSW

Education and/or Experience:
Master’s Degree in Counseling or Psychology

Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft software applications, Google Suite; databases (such as a learning management system) and internet usage.
