SABINO Captain 


Mystic Seaport Museum is hiring a seasonal Captain to operate and maintain the SABINO. They will ensure the safety and welfare of the crew and passengers.


  • Provide that the vessel meets all regulatory requirements, that all equipment is tested as specified
  • Hire, train, schedule, and terminate the operating crew
  • Order all operating supplies
  • Develop and maintain cordial working relations with staff, USCG representatives, regulatory bodies, other commercial vessels, bridge tenders, etc.
  • Represent SABINO and Mystic Seaport Museum at all times in a professional manner
  • Promote the financial security of the vessel in any manner consistent with the policies and operating philosophy of the museum and the ship
  • Coordinate interdepartmental activities in chartering, ticketing, public relations, food service
  • Arrange for all activities on board, including entertainment, food, and bar service, etc.
  • Respond to visitor inquiries
  • Provide outside consultation services for other museums, non-profit ship operators and individuals needing expertise in the field
Position Requirements
  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination and booster by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination will be required.
  • USCG license, 25 tons, inland waters
  • Ability to work well with other shipyard staff members and public
  • Ability to supervise operating crew
  • Versatility and willingness to perform a wide variety of shipyard functions

The Museum's grounds cover 19 acres on the Mystic River in Mystic, CT and include a recreated New England coastal village, a working shipyard, formal exhibit halls, and state-of-the-art artifact storage facilities. The Museum is home to more than 500 historic watercraft, including four National Historic Landmark vessels, most notably the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan, America's oldest commercial ship still in existence.
