Description

JOB SUMMARY:

  • The EMS paramedic functions as a team member on an Advanced Life Support (ALS) Ambulance providing patient care in situations including, but not limited to, interfacility transports, emergency 9-1-1 responses, hospital discharges, cath lab stand-bys and community relations events.
  • Reports directly to the director of the Emergency Department. 
  • When not on a transport, the EMS Paramedic may be required to assist in the hospital emergency department with Director approval.
  • The Emergency Department (ED) Paramedic provides direct patient care under the supervision of the RN as well as Advanced Cardiac Life Support under direct supervision of the physician while working in the Emergency Department or in the community in a paramedicine role. Duties and responsibilities are performed in a manner adhering to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • The ED Paramedic participates with all members of the ED team to facilitate patient flow through the ED. The ED paramedic provides patient care as dictated by patient need, direction of the RN and in compliance with the scope of practice outlined in Nursing Policy NR 300 "Delegation of Care."

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

PATIENT CARE

  • Provides and documents care consistent with hospital, departmental and unit policies/procedures/protocols.
  • Places patient in room as requested by RN.
  • Performs measurement of temperature, non-invasive blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, pain scale, and oxygen saturation and records in patients’ medical record.
  • Attaches patient to cardiac monitor.
  • Performs 12 lead EKG.
  • Places patient on Oxygen as ordered by /MD.
  • Performs ACLS skills under direct supervision of MD* during code situations in the Emergency Department.
  • Performs veni-puncture for blood draws or insert/remove peripheral IV/Lock.
  • Administers limited medications as ordered by physician and detailed in Nursing Policy. May co-sign narcotic waste.
  • Hangs IV fluids as ordered by a physician.
  • Obtain IS or Peak Flow as ordered by /MD.
  • Performs Accu Checks as ordered by MD.
  • Performs Chest compressions and manually ventilates patient as requested by RN/MD.
  • Assist with cleansing, suture set up and dressing wounds as requested by RN/MD.
  • Assist with the care of an Orthopedic patient as requested by RN/MD (Ace wraps, Ice, slings, etc.).
  • Assist with EENT procedures as requested.
  • Assist with Gastric Lavage as requested per RN.
  • Obtains CCMS, Stool, Wound, Nasal and Throat cultures as requested.
  • Performs I&O Catheter as ordered by MD.
  • Assists ED staff in keeping patients and family members informed.
  • Discontinues peripheral IV’s.
  • Transports/Assist with transport of patients as requested by RN.
  • Assist with ambulation and dismissal of patients.
  • Assist with RHC care as requested.
  • Communicates pertinent patient information to the RN clearly, accurately, concisely and in a timely manner.
  • Completes Patient Transport to and from Hospital while utilizing EMS System Protocols/Physician Orders.

EMS PARAMEDIC DUTIES

  • Ensure the ambulance and all equipment is ready for use at the beginning of each shift and after every call. This includes appropriate cleaning and disinfecting of the interior and exterior of the vehicle: appropriate cleaning and disinfecting of the equipment; and performing some routine maintenance.
  • Performs daily inspections of their base and/or station for cleanliness. Then performs the appropriate housekeeping duties to ensure their living quarters are clean, free from clutter and sanitary at all times.
  • Maintain appropriate communications with company dispatch, medical control and other agencies via radio, data link, pager or cell phone as required.
  • Be knowledgeable as to local geography to include location of hospitals, public venues as well as local streets and highway systems.
  • Respond to emergencies and non-emergencies using appropriate care and caution in accordance with state law, EMS, regulations, organization policy, and the principles of safe emergency vehicle operations.
  • Renders emergency and non-emergency medical care and transportation in accordance with local medical protocol and state law, adhering to company, local, regional, and state guidelines regarding patient care consistent with good judgment and the provision of high-quality medical care.
  • Appropriately and safely delivers the patient to the appropriate medical facility.
  • Completes and signs all appropriate documentation for every response and transport.
  • Obtains complete medical histories and billing information for all patients treated and /or transported.

DEPARTMENT DUTIES

  • Stocks supplies, cleans equipment & transports to/from CSR as needed, transports specimens via pneumatic tube system, orders supplies as needed.
  • Receives patients into Meditech at the front desk, and notifies the charge nurse/triage nurse immediately of patient’s presence and chief complaint.

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

  • Attends educational activities to improve knowledge/skill.
  • Contributes to implementing and supporting progressive change, making suggestions to solve patient care or unit problems.
  • Attends 80% unit/departmental meetings and in-service presentations as assigned.
  • Demonstrates acceptable attendance and punctuality.
  • Accepts responsibility for recertification as a paramedic and for other required license’s and certifications as required by the organization, local, regional, and state policies, regulations or laws.
  • When necessary and appropriate, acts as a team leader in dealing with emergency and non-emergency situations, directing and supervising other members of the emergency medical care team.
  • Reports to assigned shifts properly groomed and attired and on time unless the proper notification has been made. Remains on duty until properly relieved.
  • Must have the ability to perform effectively as team leader and team member in patient care situations.
  • Must have the ability to perform effectively in carrying out public relations and community education functions with members of the medical community and general public in promoting the organization.

QUALITY / PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT

  • Participate in identifying or recommending areas for improvement.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities to improve patient care related to planned outcomes.
  • Assures all organization goals, objectives and procedures are followed on a daily basis.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

  • Completes assigned responsibilities in an efficient, timely manner.
  • Recognizes impact of actions on other departments and interacts in a manner conducive to teamwork and cost containment.
  • Properly charges exams upon completion through the IMS according to departmental procedure.

SAFETY

  • Practice is consistent with safety principles, OSHA Guidelines and infection control guidelines.
  • Provides for protection and support while moving, transferring or ambulating patients.
  • Observes equipment for malfunction and takes appropriate action.
  • Adheres to Universal Precautions/Body Substance Isolation when dealing with patient contacts. Is familiar with and practices the infection control policies and procedures of the organization.
  • Ensures security of buildings, vehicles, equipment, supplies, systems and all other organization property.
  • Ensures security of all company computer systems by adhering to security procedures and utilizing appropriate password policies.
  • Demonstrates complete knowledge, understanding and compliance of organization policies and procedures.
  • Maintains security and privacy of all organization and patient information at all times in accordance HIPPA and all other local, state and federal regulations
  • Maintains security and privacy of all confidential and proprpriay organization information at all times in accordance with company policy.

MANDATORY LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:

The following licenses/certifications are required:

CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)
ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: Paramedic

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a state recognized paramedic/paramedicine program.
  • Must be currently licensed with the appropriate level of state motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Must have a clean driving record as approved by organization vehicle liability insurer.
