POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for executing all cellar activities, from crush to bottle.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Seeks an understanding of not only “the how” but also “the why” behind every cellar operation.
  • Works closely with Assistant Winemaker to ensure absolute wine quality.
  • Preserves and protects the integrity and quality of Opus One and Overture, while enhancing their value.
  • Participates in all cellar functions, including cleaning and sanitation, barrel work, racking, wine movements, filling barrels, topping, wine additions, blending, fining, filtering, bottling.
  • Harvest duties include operation of crush equipment and presses, fruit weigh-scale, pumpovers.
  • Preserves and protects the quality of grapes from Opus One’s Estate Vineyards.
  • Assists in the preventative maintenance and repairs of all cellar equipment.
  • Coordinates grape, juice, and wine samples with the lab.
  • Measures Dissolved Oxygen during wine movements.
  • Organizes fermentation data and cellar records for wine tracking.
  • Maintains work area in a safe, professional, and organized manner.
  • Operates forklift.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.
 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Has minimum of five - seven (5-7) years advanced experience in all areas of cellar operation.
  • Has been threshold tested to detect and identify sensory faults in must and wine and communicates them to the winemaking team.
  • Must be able to consistently perform quality work with minimum supervision.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel, and winery software programs including TankNet, Logix, AgCode, and Vintrace.
  • Possesses strong verbal communication skills and intermediate math skills.
  • Able to interpret written work orders and a variety of instructions in oral, diagram, and schedule form.
  • Uses proper safety equipment during all relevant cellar activities and contributes to improving winery safety procedures.
  • Prioritizes attention to detail and purity of focus in handling multiple competing tasks and responsibilities.
  • Understands the consequences of various problem situations and refers them to the appropriate people for resolution.
  • Must demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and the ability to effectively work in a team environment.

Physical ability to perform tasks that may require prolonged standing, sitting, lifting, and other activities necessary to perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Working Conditions/ Hazards:

Work is performed in various environments: indoor, outdoor, hot, cold. The individual will be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic chemicals, electrical hazards, and fumes or airborne particles relative to normal cellar processes. Occasionally works near moving machinery parts. Noise levels are usually moderate to loud.

  • Follow all company policies and procedures including job safety, safety rules and regulations.
  • Assist management to provide safe and healthy working conditions at all times.
  • Immediately report all unsafe conditions, work-related accidents, and illnesses to the Safety Manager and your supervisor.

COMPENSATION: Base Compensation Range: $24.00-30.00 USD hourly*

* The base compensation range is base salary only. In addition to base compensation, all roles are eligible for individual performance bonus and company bonus that range from role to role.
