The Patient Support Specialist position is one that allows for growth opportunities and Career development. In this department you will learn all the major areas in our Primary Care office. This includes Clinic, where you will learn to do patient work-ups and special testing that the doctor requests, Optical, where you will learn to fit patients for eyeglasses, select the proper lens based on a patient’s lifestyle and needs, and do needed adjustments to patients eyeglasses, and Patient Services, including check-in and check-out where you will learn to schedule patients, acquire accurate insurance information, pull and file insurance and bill patients according to the tests performed by the doctor.

Position Requirements

ESSENTIAL RESPONSILIBITIES

  • Perform essential daily duties per the requirements and responsibilities of the position being performed: Technician, Optician, or Patient Services.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school graduate, or equivalent
  • Previous experience in optometry environment is preferred

COMPETENCIES:

  • Proficient in EHR, including exceptional keyboarding skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Quality of work reflects efficiency and accuracy
  • Ability to obtain knowledge and skills on the job or through educational courses

  • Polite, professional, and courteous
  • Ability to lead, motivate and promote a team environment
  • Proactive, adaptable, with the ability to work under pressure to accomplish projects and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT (per ADA guidelines):

  • Physical Activity: Talking, Hearing.
  • Physical requirements: Sedentary work. Involves sitting most of the time.
  • The worker is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT:

  • Staff members are required to meet training expectations within the initial 90-day probationary period.
  • Obtaining certification through an optometric certification program is encouraged. BVEP will aid all employees eligible for the Employee Career Development Program.
