As Controller, you will direct the establishment of (and adherence to) Brownells accounting principles, practices, and procedures for the maintenance of its fiscal records and the preparation of its financial reports. You will direct general and property accounting, cost accounting, and budgetary control. Additionally, you will appraise operating results in terms of costs, budgets, operating policies, trends, and increased profit opportunities. The ideal Controller is someone who has more than 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, a public accounting background, and experience at a Fortune 500 company.

What You Will Do

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs and coordinates all accounting operational functions (A/R, A/P, and Credit)
  • Prepares and analyzes financial statements including Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Cash Flow Statement for management, Board, and outside lenders
  • Coordinates with external accountants for tax preparation and annual audit
  • In conjunction with CFO, effectively manages treasury functions including cash receipts and disbursements, capital expenditures, leasing agreements, debt services, investments, and payroll
  • Evaluates and manages internal controls within the organization
  • Responsible for keeping up to date on all regulatory (GAAP, IRS, DOL, etc.) changes affecting the company as they relate to the finance and accounting department
  • Works with outside brokers to ensure best practices that optimize position with regard to insurance related policies and practices
  • Ensures internal audits are completed on a routine basis and works with other personnel to ensure all practices are in compliance
  • Responsible for performance coaching and providing career growth opportunities to develop team members
  • Along with CFO, takes a leadership role in departmental meetings and works with team to execute, monitor, and evaluate team objectives and their business impact
  • Champions company policies as they relate to the corporate vision, corporate ethics, and compliance with affirmative action and equal opportunity employment

 

What You Will Need

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, or Finance
  • CPA (active preferred)
  • At least 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience
  • Experience managing a company or division with sales in excess of $1B

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA
  • Public Accounting experience
  • Audit experience

  • Ability to drive results through a strong attention to detail, proactive approach to problem solving, and great partnership and negotiation skills
  • Strong consultation, persuasion and influencing skills to support communication of new business needs
  • Ability to synthesize financial information into a concise story and communicate it effectively, leveraging strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer/systems skills; proficient with Excel and ERP systems

Physical Demands

Sedentary work. Sedentary work involves lifting no more than 10 pounds at a time and occasionally lifting or carrying articles like docket files, ledgers, and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required occasionally, and other sedentary criteria are met.
