GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION

The Cornerstone Fund is a nonprofit social impact lender affiliated with the United Church of Christ. The Fund provides low-cost flexible financing for churches and faith-based nonprofits that create a positive impact in their communities, using dollars invested by churches, faith-based nonprofits and individuals. Projects range from basic church renovations to affordable housing, solar installations, social enterprise, and large-scale mixed-use development. The Cornerstone Fund, like the United Church of Christ, is a progressive organization that values and promotes inclusion, equality, social justice, and creation care.

The Social Impact Investing Associate (SIIA) assists with all aspects of the Fund’s activities, including loan underwriting, processing, closing, and servicing, and investment advising and servicing. In this capacity, the Social Impact Investing Associate will help monitor and fulfill the day-to-day requirements of lending and investing clients to ensure an overall superlative customer experience. Because Cornerstone is a small organization, the SIIA will have ample opportunity to be meaningfully involved in all aspects of social impact lending and investing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Underwriting:

  • Train to underwrite real estate-based loans, including acquisitions, refinances, and maturity modifications. 
  • Train to risk rate loans at annual review.   
  • Attend (and eventually participate in) pipeline meetings where loans are presented, discussed, and structured.

Communication:

  • Assist the lending team in communication with potential, current and former lending clients from pre-application conversations through loan structuring and closing.
  • Assist the portfolio team in communication with lending clients for post-closing loan servicing as needed.
  • Assist the investment team in communication with investing clients from structuring through servicing.

Portfolio:

  • Assist the portfolio team with pre-close due diligence, including items such as certificates of good standing, insurance certificates, and various commitment letter conditions.
  • Assist the portfolio team with post-close due diligence, including recording mortgages and auditing files.
  • Assist the portfolio team with construction draws.
  • Assist the portfolio team in obtaining annual financials from borrowers.
  • Assist the portfolio team in maintaining the integrity of loan files and the accuracy of borrower records in Cornerstone’s loan processing software.
  • Assist the portfolio team in preparing mortgage satisfactions and partial releases.

Desired Candidate Profile:

The SIIA should be pursuing a degree in finance, economics, or business, and should demonstrate both financial acumen and math aptitude. The SIIA must have an interest in social impact lending and investing, must be self-motivated and conscientious, and is expected to possess excellent interpersonal and management skills. The SIIA supports the vision of the Cornerstone Fund as a multiracial, multicultural, open and affirming social impact investor, accessible to all.

Minimum Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform successfully in this position:

  • Pursuing a Bachelors’ degree at a four-year college or university.
  • Understanding of Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with individuals and groups of diverse backgrounds, experience, and levels of sophistication.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and collegially, as well as independently.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a diverse and inclusive environment, and willingness to learn and adapt to the UCC denominational culture.

The internship begins mid-May through mid-August 2023.  The intern will be expected to work from the Cornerstone Office in Cleveland, OH.
