Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION: Bears primary responsibility for developing and coordinating strategies, initiatives and resources related to the comprehensive UCC Volunteer Ministries Program in collaboration with ministries across the wider church.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Conceptualize and develop a plan for relating the Volunteer Ministries program to the overall mission of the UCC and WCM with a focus on youth, young adults, and intergenerational missions.
  • Develop and administer the Partners in Service program, including recruitment, processing, and placement of individual volunteers; development of new placement and housing sites; and training and retreat gatherings.
  • Develop and administer mission trip opportunities including resources and programs to enable groups to participate in meaningful short- and long-term missions and opportunities to learn with partners.
  • Coordinate and implement special UCC Service Opportunities at national gatherings in collaboration with appropriate parties (e.g., Local Arrangements Committee for General Synod, Minister of Youth & Young Adult Engagement for National Youth Event).
  • Develop and administer leadership training and orientation providing resources and offering workshops and experiential opportunities to develop mission trip leaders.
  • Assist in developing new financial resources including the Endowment Fund for Volunteer Ministries.
  • Coordinate with the Minister for Disaster Response and Recovery in promotion of disaster recovery site volunteer opportunities.
  • Co-host ecumenical volunteer mission opportunities with volunteer programs of UCC denominational partners.
  • Cooperate with Global Ministries Mission Personnel Office in identifying and placement of volunteers in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Interpret the Volunteer Ministries Program to the UCC constituency through speaking engagements, articles, correspondence, and preparation of printed, electronic (web) and other resources.
  • Represent the UCC in ecumenical volunteer programs and coalitions.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Global H.O.P.E. team for developing resources and promoting mission engagement around the Team’s core work.

Participate in Global H.O.P.E. Team grant review meetings to provide input for assessing volunteer grant applications, sharing knowledge or insight of organizations seeking funding.

 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The following requirements are representative of knowledge skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position:

 

  • A college degree in a related field, or the equivalent amount of demonstrated work experience.
  • A commitment to, and theological understanding of, global mission in its broad range of concerns; knowledge of and experience within the UCC is desirable.
  • Ordination or authorized ministerial standing in the United Church of Christ preferred.
  • Prior experience in the field of Volunteerism.
  • Demonstrated success in program development, administration, promotion and marketing; experience in budget control and supervision of staff.
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, cultural and religious settings with commitment to pluralism within the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission.
  • Ability to function effectively in a team environment including group decision-making.
  • Demonstrated public speaking, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and flexibility to travel in the U.S..
  • Computer literacy skills.
  • Other duties as required.

 

OTHER:

Relocation to Cleveland is expected.
