Purpose of Position:

  • Skippering 20-foot catboat Breck Marshall and interpreting the Museum while on scheduled half-hour excursions

 

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare vessel for daily operation
  • Safely operate vessel as scheduled
  • Interact with Museum visitors on regularly scheduled excursions and at docks
  • Report all issues to proper people
 
Position Requirements
  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination and booster by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination will be required.
  • Due to the nature of the work involved, the incumbent interacts with a broad range of individuals including fellow staff, visitors, volunteers, trustees, vendors, etc. In all of these interactions, the reputation of Mystic Seaport and the Watercraft Area are at stake. It is essential that a high degree of professionalism be exhibited at all times.
  • Because of the broad interests and variety of work expected of the Watercraft Preservation and Program Staff, much work outside the parameter of this job description is desirable and expected.
  • The nature of the work involved requires extended periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions during spring, summer, and fall.
  • Must be able to access boats, floats, bilges.
  • Willingness to work weekends, evenings, and holiday as needed for events, projects, or to accomplish the work at hand
  • USCG Operator’s license for six passenger sailing vessels on inland lakes, bays, and sounds required

The Museum's grounds cover 19 acres on the Mystic River in Mystic, CT and include a recreated New England coastal village, a working shipyard, formal exhibit halls, and state-of-the-art artifact storage facilities. The Museum is home to more than 500 historic watercraft, including four National Historic Landmark vessels, most notably the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan, America's oldest commercial ship still in existence.
