Senior Manager, Strategic Initiatives 


The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Director and President of the Academy Museum, the Senior Manager, Strategic Initiatives will serve as a trusted advisor, providing strategic support and insight in an exciting early period in the institution's life. You will guide initiatives with organization-wide impact, along with managing the operations of the executive office. You will also play a critical role in the efficient flow of information across the Museum and with colleagues at the Academy, the Margaret Herrick Library, and Academy Film Archive.

In addition, you will ensure the Director and President's time is leveraged effectively by engaging the right participants, setting the agenda, and ensuring the Director and President is well prepared. This is a strategic and facilitative role that requires a combination of focus, flexibility, and interpersonal savviness. The role requires and rewards a resourceful individual with strong emotional intelligence, motivation, and analytical skills. The ideal candidate will understand the intricacies of the film industry and film-related programming and preservation and will have a passion for actualizing initiatives that bring the power of film to diverse communities.

You Will:

  • Lead the development of the Museum's first strategic planning process.
  • Drive cross-departmental, Academy-wide, and multi-entity strategic initiatives from ideation to implementation as directed by the Director and President, and in collaboration with the executive team.
  • Work with the Director and President to deliver, monitor and communicate operating plans and progress toward strategic goals.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure priority projects and strategic objectives are met.
  • Build strategies that leverage the Academy's unparalleled film-related collections, and the Museum's mission of understanding, celebrating, and preserving cinema.
  • Identify and provide recommendations on improvements across the organization to amplify the Museum's impact and inclusivity.
  • Respond to inquiries and communicate on behalf of the Director and President, emulating the director's 'voice' for a large volume of communications, including remarks at special events, meeting talking points, and materials for various speaking engagements involving internal and external audiences.
  • Keep the Director and President, as well as senior leaders informed of issues and initiatives.
  • Represent the Director and President in meetings.
  • Use your knowledge of film to collaborate with education and programming departments to achieve the Museum's strategic goals of reaching diverse communities.
  • Plan, coordinate and lead meetings and workshops.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Museum Studies, Business Administration, or a similar field.
  • 5+ years in a management role, preferably at a non-profit, cultural institution, or museum.
  • A deep understanding of the film, arts, and nonprofit sectors and the ability to create initiatives and strategies that improve the overall business model.
  • Proven experience organizing and directing multiple teams and departments.
  • Impeccable communication skills in written and verbal forms.
  • Extremely versatile and dedicated to efficient productivity.
  • Experience planning and leading strategic initiatives.
  • An understanding of member-driven organizations and a proven track record of working alongside artists, curators, and/or programmers.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • A balanced orientation towards results and good processes.
  • An understanding of organizational development and the ability to influence different teams.
  • Unquestionable ethics and integrity.
  • Ability to successfully navigate within varying degrees of ambiguity in a fast-paced environment.

The expected base salary range for this role is $80,000 to $87,500. The actual base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
