Substance Use Disorder Peer Support Specialist

OVERVIEW: The Substance Use Disorder Peer Support Specialist is responsible for providing case management, collaboration, and support needed to assist KCS clients in exercising control over their own life and recovery process. Klallam Counseling Services provides a holistic treatment model for substance use disorder in a team environment.

SUPERVISED BY: Treatment Program Manager

POSITION STATUS: Regular full-time non-exempt. This position includes medical, dental, life insurance, retirement, annual/sick leave benefits

SALARY LEVEL: $19-21 Depending on Experience

WORK SCHEDULE: Business hours are Monday - Thursday 8:00 am - 6:00 pm and Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. The work schedule for this position may vary depending on agency needs. Must have the ability to work daytime, evenings, and weekends as required.


  • Collaborate with Substance Use Disorder Professionals to provide support to clients in meeting their treatment goals.
  • Document client encounters in accordance with agency policy.
  • Assist clients in making and getting to essential appointments.
  • Provide transportation for clients when necessary and appropriate under KCS transportation policies.
  • Participate in activities designed to increase productivity within KCS.
  • Maintains an up to date phone and address list of referral agents and community resources.
  • Maintains knowledge of community resources and assists clients in appropriate use and access to community resources.
  • Communicate and work effectively with all outside referral sources/community resources.
  • Work in a cooperative and collaborative manner as a part of the KCS team.
  • Attend KCS staffing meetings to provide updates and input.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and set a positive example of behaviors for clients.
  • Assist in building positive working relationships with staff in all departments of the Lower Elwha Health Department and all other LEKT departments.
  • Represent KCS program at community events when requested.
  • Assist in developing and planning community and recovery events/actives sponsored by KCS.
  • Run agency related errands as required.
  • Other duties as assigned that are relevant to the successful operation of the agency.
Position Requirements


  • Must have a Substance Use Disorder Peer Support certification in Washington, or be able to obtain certification with in six months.
  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalency..
  • Must possess an unrestricted, valid driver’s license and be able to drive KCS transport vans. Must not have an SR-22 requirement.
  • Computer competency in word processing, spreadsheets, and data base.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to express thoughts clearly in verbal and written communications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with clients and the community.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working and public relationships.
  • Ability to work independently, makes decisions, and maintain program goals and priorities.
  • Knowledge of substance use disorder treatment and the effect of substance use disorder on individuals, families and communities.
  • Knowledge and adherence to ethics and professional boundaries including an absolute adherence to confidentiality.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Good personal hygiene and grooming.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check and UA drug screening test.
  • Must provide proof of Covid vaccination.
  • Preferred to be an active member of the recovery community in Clallam County.
  • Required to model a clean and sober lifestyle both on and off the job.
  • Demonstrated personal commitment to his/her own recovery and have maintained that recovery for a minimum of two consecutive years.
  • If past client of agency, must not have been a current client in the past year.


  • Stamina to work 40 hours per week primarily in an office setting
  • Ability to reach and squat for filing purposes.
  • Walking and standing; sitting down, driving for long periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry light loads of approximately 25 pounds.
  • Requires use of standard office equipment, including computer, phone, fax, and photocopier.


  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe policies and procedures, including the Drug Free Workplace
  • Demonstrated knowledge and the ability to model the expectations of confidentiality.

This person must be of the conviction that alcoholism and other drug addiction are treatable illnesses and public health problems.

This person must sign an oath or permanent confidentiality covering all client-related information.
