Department: Tohono O'odham Nation Health Care (TONHC)

Division: Housekeeping

Status: Non-Exempt/Full-Time

Salary: $23.92 - $29.87/hr (DOE)

Position Summary:

Under general supervision of the Custodian Forman, Incumbent serves as a working leader of Custodians and
Housekeeping Aids while providing a full range of housekeeping services to the TONHC Sells Hospital. At any given time, the incumbent may be required to travel and assist at other TONHC Facilities as needed.

Scope of Work:

This position is located on the Tohono O’odham Nation and requires healthcare settings. The incumbent reviews subordinates daily schedules of assignments for recurring work and checks on work in progress, ensuring that finished work complies with methods, procedures, and deadlines established by the supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Depending on the area of assignment, an incumbent may not be required to perform some of the duties listed below):

  • Passes on to other workers, instructions received from a supervisor and demonstrated proper work methods and starts work.
  • Ensures needed equipment and supplies are available and obtained from supply locations.
  • Sweeps, vacuums, mops, scrubs, strips, buffs, and waxes floors. Washes walls, windows, screens, Venetian blinds, shades, and other similar items.
  • Vacuums and shampoos, rugs and carpets as required. May extract carpet as needed.
  • Sets up and disassembles equipment for meetings.
  • Ensures appropriate stock of janitorial supplies by taking inventories and ordering supplies as needed.
  • Empties and disposes of trash from wastebaskets.
  • Cleans and disinfects equipment, restrooms and ensures restrooms are stocked with appropriate supplies.
  • Checks work in progress and when finished for compliance with supervisor’s instructions.
  • Answers workers’ questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives.
  • Provide information to supervisor on status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems.
  • Assures that safety and infection control standards for healthcare are followed.
  • Reports need for major repairs to supervisor.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O’odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of good housekeeping practices.
  • Knowledge of housekeeping tools, chemicals, cleaners, and disinfectants.
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment and materials common to custodial services.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Skill in the proper use and care of electric, power, and hand tools and equipment.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
  • Ability to plan and organize work activities.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain privileged, confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict timelines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma.
  • One year of work experience in custodial services.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, the incumbent(s) may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham language and English as a condition of employment.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and must be able to climb ladders for work about ground-level heights. The incumbent is occasionally required to taste or smell. The incumbent must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. The incumbent is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, including hands exposed to water containing stringent cleaning agents. Must have enough stamina to perform arduous work for sustained periods. Incumbents may work in patient care areas that use standard precautions, which sometimes require wearing personal protective equipment that may be uncomfortable.
