Description

The Clinical Microbiology Manager oversees the operations of the clinical microbiology laboratory on a day-to-day basis to ensure the highest quality of patient care while meeting regulatory and compliance requirements. This role will be responsible for managing the workflow in the microbiology lab while establishing a culture of compliance through correct standards, testing, monitoring and reporting. The Clinical Microbiology Manager reports to the Director of Operations.

The Clinical Microbiology Supervisor is responsible for all aspects of testing including:

  • Manages a team of clinical microbiology technologists or technicians performing microbiology-based procedures.
  • Provides technical support and assistance to include bench testing as needed to maintain the operations of the department.
  • Execute protocols required for verification and validation purposes.
  • Works as part of a cross-functional team to migrate tests into production.
  • Maintains QA/QC compliance for all tests performed.
  • Carry out CAP and other proficiency survey specimens as assigned.
  • Assures that all laboratory equipment is maintained in proper working order, following appropriate laboratory safety protocols.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves technical problems, ensuring corrective actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Provides ongoing performance feedback to staff through coaching, performance review and counseling to ensure staff performance expectations are met.
  • Achieves department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial, patient satisfaction and personnel management
  • Assures that laboratory supplies are maintained and ordered as needed and assures sufficient inventory is available for anticipated test volumes.
  • Performs other duties, as required.
 
Position Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • BS in Medical Technology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or related field; or
    • 6-year experience at a laboratory, with a minimum of 2 years at a laboratory having a director at a doctoral level.
  • Master’s in Chemical, Physical or Biological Sciences or related field; or
    • 4-year experience at a laboratory, with a minimum of 2 years at a laboratory having a director at a doctoral level.

Required Licensure

  • Licensed by New York State Education Department (NYSED) as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist required

Required Certification:

  • Current certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required

Required Skills:

  • Good oral communication.
  • Desire to learn.
  • Ability to read information quickly, interpret and retain it for later use.
  • Listens and gets clarification.
  • Strong technology skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Able to work in a team-oriented environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing or sitting for an extended period
  • Able to lift 25 lbs.
  • Audible recognition of alarms
