Bolton & Menk is growing, and we have an exciting opportunity for an Urban Designer to join our team! This is a fantastic opportunity to join a well-established team of professionals committed to helping communities grow by becoming more walkable, compact, sustainable and inclusive.
The position is based in the Minneapolis with work across offices in the Midwest and Southeast.
The project types will vary, but you will focus on small area plans, urban design plans, station area plans and other design focused projects for both private and public sector clients.
In this role you will:
- Work on a team to create a range of urban design focused plans – including small Area plans, station area plans, corridor plans, and public realm plans.
- Apply your urban design skills and knowledge of the fundamentals of city planning and town design to help advance and advocate for well designed cities, towns, neighborhoods, corridors and districts.
- Conduct project and practice related research that advance and inform our work.
- Produce a variety of graphics including design sketches, concept diagrams and rendered illustrations for presentations, documents, and proposals.
- Layout documents, reports and deliverables in a variety of formats ranging from digital to traditional media.
- Support public engagement by participating in group facilitation, public meetings, client worksesssions, and design charettes.
- Will be a generalist, demonstrate curiosity about the built environment, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and have a strong conviction about the role the physical environment plays in the life of a community.
- Have primary knowledge in at least of the following two of the following specializations:
- Landscape Architecture
- Urban Planning
- Urban Design
- Environmental Design
- Urban Studies

What we are looking for:
- 4-7 years of professional experience in Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Architecture, or Urban Design
- Bachelor's and Masters Degree in urban design, landscape architecture, environmental design, geography or closely related field from an accredited college or university.
- Landscape Architectural License preferred, but not required.
- AICP Registration is preferred but not required.
- Thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
- Thorough Knowledge of 3Dmodeling software (Sketchup, Rhino, Lumion)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate graphically through digital and traditional pen and ink media.
