Status: Exempt/Full-time

Salary: $68,593.41/annually

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, assists in planning, developing, organizing, implementing and conducting a health education and/or prevention program for a specific audience or health condition. This includes but is not limited to the Cancer Planning Project, the Community Based Diabetes Program and Maternal and Child health issues. Provides or oversees trainings to Department of Health and Human Services staff and others.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans, administers and implements assigned community prevention and education programs; recommends course of action and evaluates results.
  • Coordinates assigned community prevention and education programs with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) divisions, the Indian Health Services and other federal, state and local education programs.
  • Develops, conducts and evaluates training programs in prevention and education for area of assignment; provides or arranges for training to staff to increase knowledge regarding cancer prevention, screenings, and available resources to increase utilization of services and solve health problems.
  • Prepares reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions; maintains accurate records reflecting work activities.
  • Creates educational brochures and other printed material integrating the Tohono O’odham culture.
  • Recommends the use and distribution of education materials for training sessions, workshops, conferences and professional presentations.
  • Depending on area of assignment, may plan and administer support groups.
  • Depending on area of assignment may work with outside agencies, health care providers or individuals to deliver services or promote programs.
  • Maintains professional knowledge by conducting research, attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; confers with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O’odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of public health education methodology and principles
  • Knowledge of tribal, state and public health organizations, their functions and services.
  • Knowledge of available educational resources and support services appropriate to area of assignment.
  • Skill in public speaking to include ability to interpret medical terminology.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
  • Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software programs.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Ability to design and implement group trainings, community wide awareness campaigns, and educational campaigns.
  • Ability to carry out instructions provided in verbal or written format.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

Depending on area of assignment – an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education, Health Administration or related field, and two (2) years’ work experience in public health administration or health education; or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver’s license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O’odham Nation tribal employer’s insurance requirements to receive a driver’s permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department’s needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O’odham Language and English as a condition of employment.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

The Nation is the second largest reservations in Arizona in both population and geographical size, with a land base of 2.8 million acres and 4,460 square miles, approximately the size of the State of Connecticut. Its four non-contiguous segments total more than 2.8 million acres at an elevation of 2,674 feet.
