SUMMARY

This position is responsible for designing, planning, and implementing evaluation plans for the Advancing Conservation through Empathy (ACE) for Wildlife initiative and other programs that advance the zoo's mission, support social change for conservation, and/or generate revenue to support zoo operations.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement evaluation plans in collaboration with project teams, leadership, and external partners.
  • Lead data collection and analysis to evaluate the use of empathy-based interpretive practices across a Network of zoos and aquariums.
  • Manage databases and perform quantitative and qualitative data analysis; write reports to communicate findings.
  • Work with the Grant Specialist to monitor our Building Organizational Capacity to Foster Empathy for Wildlife Granting Program, providing evaluation expertise, resources, and guidance to grantee organizations.
  • Coordinate collaborations with external evaluators, and research partners.
  • Facilitate the design and implementation of a collective outcome mapping and data collection effort across a Network of accredited zoos and aquariums, and develop basic data dashboards for monitoring.
  • Provide evaluation capacity building opportunities and technical assistance to internal teams and external partners through mentoring and training.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, volunteers, and external partners, including grantees and ACE for Wildlife Network Members.
  • Research content and write articles, blog posts, publications, grant narrative information, communications, and other materials in support of the empathy projects.
  • Contribute to the implementation and improvement of the zoo’s culturally responsive and equitable evaluation practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.) from an accredited college or university plus two (2) years of related experience, preferably in evaluation, social science, visitor research, informal learning, community development, applied psychology, anthropology or a similar field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience developing and implementing evaluation or research design, preferably within an educational or informal learning setting.
  • Demonstrated experience with quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods and analysis, including selecting and using appropriate basic statistics, and qualitative coding.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook). Must be able to work with customized databases and conduct online research.
  • Excellent communication skills in writing, speaking, listening for understanding, and presenting content to a range of audiences.
  • Comfortable with change, innovation, and creative approaches to collaboration and evaluation.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and their promotion through equitable and culturally responsive evaluation practices.
  • Skilled at project management, including attention to detail, organization, and the ability to effectively prioritize.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting, as well as represent the department in cross departmental meetings to reach cross functional goals.
  • Ability to mentor evaluation with untrained staff and volunteers.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience measuring affective outcomes, such as emotions or values.
  • Familiarity with SPSS or other statistical software.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • The person in this position is asked to both sit and walk or transit across the 92-acre campus in variable weather conditions, and is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • This position may occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include weekends, some evenings and holidays. Job may include travel to the partner sites in WA, AK, ID, ND, MN, WI, MT.

Pay: $65,500 - $71,000 per year

Employment Requirements:

Applicants must be at least 18 years old. A criminal background check and driving record review will be required of the selected applicant. The selected applicant must reside and conduct work in Washington State.
