Student Manager Aquatics (Recreational Sports)

Definition and Purpose

Under the supervision of the Coordinator – Aquatics and Safety, the student manager for Aquatics is responsible for managing the Lifeguard and Lead Lifeguard staff. This position supervises a staff of 25 to 35 and works closely with the recreational sports leadership team. This position requires effective communication with staff and participants regarding programs, services, policies, and emergency response.

In order to maximize the student manager’s personal development and ensure that their experience with ASI is broad based, they will be assigned additional responsibilities beyond their specific program or staff area.

Educational Requirements and Qualifying Experience

  • Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units. All ASI student staff must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at Cal Poly. Graduate students must carry 4 units/3.0 cumulative GPA at Cal Poly.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise, schedule, and manage daily operations for staff of 15 to 25 student employees.
  • Assist in developing and conducting annual performance evaluations.
  • Train employees in essential duties, customer service and risk management.
  • Initiate and/or manage staff coaching, discipline and feedback for staff area.
  • Participate in leadership development training with immediate supervisor and student manager leadership team.
  • Complete weekly administrative duties, including but not limited to service requests, developing agendas and conducting regular staff meetings.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Abide by and enforce all ASI and campus security regulations regarding confidential and private information.
  • Effectively manage applicable internal and external communication outlets.
  • Ensure all area manuals, procedures and resources are accurate and easily available to staff.
  • Display awareness of all ASI and staff area policies; enforce policies as necessary.
  • Maintain the integrity of the ASI philosophy and brand.
  • Produce regular reports, reviews, and assessments of staff area.
  • Exhibit punctuality and dependability by maintaining a consistent work schedule.
  • Serve as an information source of Recreational Sports and ASI programs and services.
  • Maintain professionalism in the workplace including but not limited to attire, behavior, and language.
  • Maintain familiarity with emergency response protocol.
  • Attend all meetings, workshops, and retreats.
  • Provide quality customer service to all staff and customers.
  • Maintain a positive work environment though interaction with staff, peers, and superiors.
  • Demonstrate understanding of effective and efficient resource management.
  • Demonstrate understanding and competency of specific technological resources used by staff area.

 

Specific Responsibilities

  • Current Lifeguard, CPRO, AED, First Aid, and Administering Emergency Oxygen certifications required.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification required.
  • Expected to work lifeguard shifts as necessary in conjunction with administrative duties.
  • Educate employees/participants and enforce policies regarding the safe and proper use of pool areas.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain systems to ensure safe conditions and equipment for staff/participants in pool areas.
  • Interact with operations staff to ensure facility upkeep is to standards.
  • Maintain and compile daily, monthly, quarterly usage statistics.
  • Conduct meetings and in-service training with Lifeguard staff.
  • Responsible for all Lifeguard and Lead Lifeguard duties as described in appropriate job descriptions.
  • Serve as a role model for the Aquatics Staff.
  • Act as a liaison between Lifeguard Staff, Lead Lifeguards and Recreational Sports leadership team.
  • Maintain familiarity with evacuation plan for work area.
  • Maintain prompt hours and follow absence procedures.
  • Promote growth and expansion of program (public relations-outreach).
  • Serve on Recreational Sports committees as needed.
  • Complete position specific projects/long-term projects.
  • Inventory/determine equipment purchasing needs.
  • Complete quarterly and annual reports relative to Aquatics and Summer Programs.
  • Prepare presentations as necessary.
  • Assist with budget preparation and implementation.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.

Period of Employment

If hired, student managers must commit to a minimum of 9 weeks of employment over the summer quarter. Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.

Compensation and Hours

Pay Rate: $17.50 per hour; 20 hours per week needed (maximum 20 hours per week while attending academic classes). Maximum 30 hours per week when not attending academic classes.
