Salary: $ 17.79/hourly

Position Summary:
Under general supervision, works closely with patients, provides basic care services and important social and emotional support, and vital information on patients conditions to the immediate supervisor.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for basic care services such as bathing, grooming and feeding patients, assisting nurses with medical equipment, and checking patient vital signs.
  • Attends to the patient’s needs, including assistance with grooming, oral hygiene, toileting, transferring, ambulation, or other needs in keeping with the patients' care requirements.
  • Serves meals, monitor patients’ diet, and helps them with eating.
  • Provides education on diet, nutrition, blood sugar control, fluid intake, safety, and medication intake.
  • Takes, measures and documents vital signs, such as, blood pressure, blood sugars, temperatures and respiration.
  • Assists with medication, and changes wound bandages.
  • Schedules appointments and arranges for transportation.
  • Schedules home visits based patient needs.
  • Works closely with patient care entities; such as, hospitals, podiatry, optometry, diabetes, counselors, physical therapy, referral centers, health transportation, and senior services.
  • Calls 911 and/or paramedic assistance, as needed.
  • Contributes to a team effort.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O’odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of the economic, educational, and health and social problems of Native Americans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, local laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of basic medical care.
  • Knowledge of basic medical equipment and procedures.
  • Knowledge of hygiene.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Skill in physical transfer and transporting patients.
  • Skill in following written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in taking, measuring and documenting vital signs.
  • Skill in simple clinical records.
  • Skill in communicating effectively with patients, health care professionals and family members.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of sensitivity to community issues and concerns.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to be compassionate and have good communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
  • Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O’odham Nation.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and one year of work experience in a nursing field, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a Certified Nursing Assistant Certification by the Arizona Board of Nursing.
  • Must obtain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within the first six months of hire.
  • Food Handler’s card must be obtained within six months after hire.
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department’s needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O’odham Language and English as a condition of employment.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, and often required to lift, bend, stretch, climb, support patients with standing, sitting, and walking. The employee is frequently required to sit; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and required to sit and drive for long periods of time through rough terrain. Employee may be exposed to infectious disease, ie, Mersa, Tuberculosis. Employee may occasionally encounter dogs, and families who may be under the influence.
