Digital Motion Picture Preservation Research Intern, Summer 2023 (Gold Rising)

Description

Job Summary:

The Academy has created and maintains the Academy Digital Preservation Forum (academydigitalpreservationforum.org), an online community for stakeholders and practitioners in the digital preservation of motion pictures. It provides a neutral forum conducive to exploring issues and catalyzing discussion around the care of motion pictures, including the future digital preservation of those originally shot on film as well as those “born digital.”

The intern will work with Academy and studio experts in motion picture archiving to expand a timeline of historical milestones and bibliographic citations related to the digital preservation of motion pictures and significant restorations, which will ultimately reside on the ADPF.

This is a limited term internship position beginning in June 2023 through August 2023. The hourly wage for this role is $16.25.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research potential additions to the timeline (such as restorations and technical developments) based on direction and suggestions from ADPF Curatorial Working Group members and other contributors, drafting bibliographic citations and summaries.
  • Make use of Academy library resources to find appropriate references, in the general press as well as specialized periodicals such as American Cinematographer, SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter.
  • Work with other Science and Technology Council and Academy members and staff, and with outside allied organizations such as universities and film archives.
  • Meet with and interview experts in the field of preservation and archiving, for the purpose of developing content for the site.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Enrolled in an accredited bachelor’s or master’s university degree program in film studies, archiving and preservation, library science, or related field, with an interest in working in the entertainment industry.
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.8
  • A keen interest in motion picture technology, workflows, and preservation.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as with others and to perform as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail with a methodical, academic approach.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills in English.

If hired, we require all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, unless a medical or religious accommodation is needed as determined on a case-by-case basis.

This internship is part of the Academy’s Gold Rising program, an 8-week internship enhancement program that incorporates learning opportunities including an intensive two-day orientation, weekly panels, exclusive networking events, workshops, screenings, and mentorship opportunities with Academy members.
