Academy Imaging Science Intern - Summer 2023 (Gold Rising)

Job Summary:

The Science and Technology Council is one of the departments of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences which serves the various needs of the industry’s science and technology community. It promotes cooperation among divergent technological interests, provides a forum for the exchange of information, fosters educational activities, and works to preserve the history of the science and technology of motion pictures. One of the Council’s projects is the Academy Color Encoding (ACES), a free, open, device-independent color management and image interchange system.

  • The intern will have the opportunity to interact with ACES working groups focused on the development of future version of the ACES system.
  • The intern will conduct experiments, analyze data, and write prototyping code

This is a limited term internship position beginning in June 2023 through August 2023. The hourly wage for this role is $16.25.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Director of Technology and Sr. Imaging Engineer to plan, conduct, and analyze experiments related to color management, color science, image perception.
  • Assist the Sr. Imaging Engineer in writing prototype image processing and color management code.
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Enrolled in an accredited imaging science, color science, engineering, computer science, photography, or film university degree program from the class of 2022 and 2023.
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.8.
  • Knowledge and interest in motion picture technology, color science, photographic science, and image engineering.
  • Understanding of basic Motion Picture and Video image capture and processing workflows.
  • Understanding of color management and color science concepts, particularly as applied to the development of color imaging systems.
  • Understanding of basic photographic concepts (f-stops, shutter speeds, exposure, optics, etc.)
  • Experience solving problems with computer programming languages and scripting languages such as Matlab, Python, R, Julia, C, C++, shell scripting, etc.
  • Experience with creative tools packages such as Adobe Photoshop, Nuke, Resolve, Baselight, etc.
  • Proficiency with Unix-like operating system (e.g. Mac OS and Linux) and shells (sh, bash, zsh, etc.)
  • Ability to work well independently as well as with others and perform as part of a team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Work may involve lifting boxes weighing up to 50 lbs. and accessing boxes from tall shelving
