Job Summary:

The Collections Management and Cataloging Internship intern is responsible for all aspects of processing books, periodicals and scripts for the Core Collection of the Margaret Herrick Library.

This is a limited term internship position beginning in June 2023 through August 2023. The hourly wage for this role is $16.25.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The duties of the intern may include but are not limited to: accessioning, digitizing, cataloging and circulating library materials (scripts, books, periodicals, etc.); cataloging in Rosebud and ContentDM. The internship also support and perform clerical tasks that support the life cycle of library materials managed by the Technical Services Department
  • Internship goals include: proficiency cataloging in CONTENTdm and Rosebud; digitizing materials according to institutional standards; creating metadata templates; importing and editing records; quality control of records based on institutional style guides and standards.
  • Under supervision, the interns will learn all functional aspects of Academy systems and have a theoretical and practical understanding of their capabilities. The interns will be competent and confident enough to work independently, assessing materials, making descriptive decisions and completing all aspects of cataloging process by the termination of their internships.

  • Develop and apply critical thinking skills in preparation for professional practice.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the processes by which information is created, evaluated, and disseminated.
  • Organize, create, archive and manage collections of information resources following professional standards.
  • Search, retrieve and produce information from a variety of systems and sources.
  • Integrate emerging technologies into professional practice.

 

 
Position Requirements

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Enrollment in ALA-accredited Master’s degree program in library and information science.
  • Bachelor’s degree in film studies, history, art history or a related field preferred.
  • A minimum of 2.8 GPA
  • Coursework in descriptive cataloging or description of archival collections and knowledge of archival best practices, preservation standards and current developments.
  • Knowledge of current metadata and descriptive standards.
  • Familiarity with content and digital asset management systems.
  • Knowledge of American and International film history.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

This internship is part of the Academy’s Gold Rising program, an 8-week internship enhancement program that incorporates learning opportunities including an intensive two-day orientation, weekly panels, exclusive networking events, workshops, screenings, and mentorship opportunities with Academy members.
