SUMMARY

This position performs manual work in a variety of indoor and outdoor work areas. Supports the Specialist, Sustainable Waste Management, in the zoo’s compost and recycling efforts towards meeting zero waste goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Assists equipment operators in the Zoo Doo yard, including spraying water/leachate on piles, opening and sorting bagged compost, cleaning trench drains, cleaning machinery, communicating compost yard status and any issues that arise.
  • Packages Zoo Doo for sale to the public by screening compost, manually filling bags/containers, attaching labels, palletizing bags, and working with volunteers that assist with the packing process. Transports compost to vendors as needed.
  • Collects unit recycling and provides staff feedback internally on recycling and composting discrepancies.
  • Acts as an on-grounds resource for staff regarding recycling and composting.
  • Loads and unload materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Provides manual assistance to other workers and uses various types of hand tools, such as shovels and rakes.
  • Loads and unloads materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Drives, pickup trucks, sedans, and other motorized vehicles in connection with manual work activities.
  • Collects, manages, and correctly disposes of specialty recycling items including hazardous waste, metal recycling, batteries, light bulbs, and electronic waste.
  • Reuses within the zoo, or correctly disposes of, large items such as appliances and furniture. Includes physically moving items and driving to donation sites.
  • Assists with the bi-annual Fecal Fest sale, including collection and loading of compost.
  • Helps collect and process organic and recycling waste at concerts and other special zoo events.
  • Supports in implementing the zoo’s Sustainability Plan and waste management related program activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and experience with recycling and composting in a professional setting; or three or more months related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A valid Washington Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office and basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekend and/or holidays.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position must frequently lift or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds.
  • A considerable amount of walking and standing is required.
  • Some stooping and crouching is required to access items on lower shelves.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to perform essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a typical office environment and/or outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. This position requires working with animal feces.

Pay: $28.00 per hour

Employment Requirements: 

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have a valid WA driver's license with a safe driving history. A criminal background check, driving record review, pre-employment physical, and pre-employment tuberculosis test will be required of the selected applicant. The selected applicant must reside and conduct work in Washington State.
