Description

Summer can't get here fast enough! Encounter animals. Concoct experiments. Build robots. No matter what you love, every day of summer will be packed full of adventure, excitement, and opportunities to explore science and know wonder. Our camps embrace hands-on learning, where campers explore science and embrace it as a way of knowing.

The Museum of Life and Science (MLS) offers one-week, full-day, hands-on science camps for children age 4 through grade 8 9 at its campus on Murray Avenue in Durham. The MLS also offers one-week, full-day camps for children age 4 through grade 5 at the Montessori Day School in Chapel Hill.

Position Objective: The Summer Camp Site Director works with the Program Manager of Camps to plan, organize and facilitate the completion of our Offsite camps leading up to Summer 2023. During the summer, the summer camp Site Director supports the Museum mission by working closely with the full-time MLS staff and summer staff (Camp Educators, Assistants and Volunteers) on all day-to-day aspects of camp. Offsite camp consists of approximately 100 campers, 16 paid camp staff, and 9 teen volunteers.  The Offsite Site Director position is an 8-month position. The position is initially a 20-hour a week position leading up to the commencement of Offsite Camp Operations. Once camp has started, the position will be 40+ hours a week for nine weeks of the Summer (June – August) This position must be available for the duration of the Summer Camp Season. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

Before Summer Camp:  

  • Work with the Program Manager of Camp experiences and Associate Program Manager of Children’s Programming to prepare for camp operations. Duties may include but are not limited to: 
    • Curriculum Development 
    • Development of training documents and agendas 
    • Assisting in identifying, interviewing, and training qualified Summer Camp position applicants 
    • Assisting in organizing of administrative systems 
    • Assisting in organizing camp supplies for offsite location.

During Summer Camp  

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of summer camp at Camp Curiosity, our Chapel Hill location.
  • Duties may include but are not limited to: 
    • Act as point of contact between parents, camp staff, and full-time Museum staff 
    • Communicating with Program Manager of Camp Experiences about daily operations 
    • Providing parents with accurate information about the Museum, answering parent questions, changing reservations as needed 
    • Work closely with Camp Educators, Assistants, and full-time Museum staff to prepare and present pre-developed science programs 
    • Coordinate logistics with Chapel Hill site staff and departments 
    • Alerting appropriate Museum staff when problems arise  
  • Maintain general safety and well-being for all campers enrolled in camp for the week 
  • Monitoring classroom, first aid, and general supplies and replenishment throughout the summer 
  • Monitor classroom spaces for general upkeep 
  • Support camp staff when necessary, including 
    • Daily check-ins throughout the week 
    • Behavioral support and mediation 
    • Facilitating programs 
    • Coaching of classroom and group management styles 
    • Providing additional basic first-aid when needed 
  • Work with MLS Volunteer Coordinator to manage teen volunteers while on site 
  • Update camp social media communications with daily pictures and insights to camp activities 
  • Offsite Site Director is also responsible with the Offsite Site Director for: 
    • Facilitating morning curbside drop-off 
    • Facilitating afternoon curbside pickup 
  • Additional duties as assigned  

 

Actual Pay Rate: $17/ hour

 
Position Requirements

Key Qualifications:

  • College degree or 2+ years equivalent experience in relevant field 
  • Previous experience in a formal or informal education setting 
  • Interest in informal science discovery 
  • Experience working with children of varying ages 
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organization 
  • Skilled at multi-tasking and planning/logistics 
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure with a positive attitude and creative problem-solving skills 
  • The ability to join and learn from the Museum’s team of professional science educators  
  • Guest relations or customer service experience 
  • Supervisory experience of children, teens, and adults 
  • Complete COVID-19 Vaccination (Johnson and Johnson, Moderna, or Pfizer) 
  • First-Aid and CPR certified 
  • Physically able to be on their feet for up to 8 hours at a time, walk distances of up to one mile over varying terrains, be able to lift 25 pounds, and work outside in heat and humidity

  • Experience in overnight camp settings 
  • Bi-lingual Proficiency  
  • Experience in volunteer management 
  • Experience in interviewing, hiring, and onboarding employees 
  • Willingness to work with live animals and insects 
  • Experience using and posting to social media 
  • Experience working with youth with disabilities 
 
Shift Days  
Pay Range $17.00/ hour
