The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

The Marketing and Group Sales Department is the front line of all visual communications for the Academy Museum and what is designed and produced by this department influences the general public’s first impression of the museum locally, nationally, and globally. Reporting to the VP of Marketing and Group Sales, the Design Director will oversee a minimum of four direct reports and interface with every department within the institution in a highly collaborative and services-oriented role. Core responsibilities are managerial as well as production-driven to maintain oversight and consistency of the Academy Museum’s brand, visual identity, and all subsequent collateral. You must have the ability to think big picture, to plan and coordinate a variety of projects across all internal and external channels. You are a highly experienced designer qualified to lead departmental designers in maintaining the unified brand look and feel across all touchpoints. Hands-on responsibilities include providing concept and direction for any museum identity assets and campaigns, along with providing brand oversight and updates.

 

You Will:

  • Oversee a minimum of 4 direct reports (designers, editors, coordinators) to manage all the Museum’s visual identity projects from conception to completion.
  • Streamline and maintain institutional adherence to the Museum’s visual brand identity guide.
  • Work with editorial staff to maintain consistency in the institutional voice and styles standards.
  • Oversee junior-to-senior level designers to maintain consistent look and feel for all museum collateral across implementations for all departments. This includes seamless integration of the Exhibition and Publication Department’s pre-established exhibition identities across additional marketing, communications, and programmatic avenues for cohesive campaigns and projects (e.g., Press kits, street marketing and banners, invites, print and digital ads, museum direct mail pieces, general marketing pieces, wayfinding and general building signage, museum guides. educational collateral, presentation decks, development invitations store merchandise and display, etc.).
  • Oversee the Design Department’s creative specialists, production coordinators, and editors to generate and maintain comprehensive project timelines for multiple ongoing projects and to closely monitor all scheduling well in advance of deadlines weekly, quarterly, and annually.
  • Work closely with the Museum’s VP of Marketing and Group Sales to translate marketing objectives into clear creative strategies.
  • Scout and share design innovations.
  • Hire and train new creative staff and consultants.
  • Manage and cultivate the career development of staff members, including designers, copywriters, editors, production coordinators, and others as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A BFA or BA in Graphic Design or a related field (a graduate degree in Graphic Design or a related field is preferred).
  • 8+ years of experience in applied design in the field of graphic design and visual communications (institutional, museum, and non-profit preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in a senior-level managerial role with oversight of multiple direct reports.
  • 5+ years of experience in print and design production (digital, lithography, signage, video, web content, etc.).
  • Proven ability to work with senior leadership (C-level, board of trustees) to pitch ideas and build consensus.
  • Strong leadership with a core understanding of design management and design production: project management, departmental project timelines, and design production.
  • High collaboration acuity to manage, direct, troubleshoot, and review all work of the internal design team; maintain positive collaborative relationships across all museum departments, and interface with outside agencies and creative partners.
  • Experience building and nurturing creative teams that include a diverse range of roles, and oversight of a collaborative network of contract and freelance designers, producers, crew, talent, and other contributors. This includes communicating the value of creative problem-solving methods, design processes, and storytelling models to a wide range of audiences.
  • Experience constructing and maintaining profitability, deliverables, timelines, and budgets. Seamlessly prioritizing new and ongoing projects, and managing museum-wide interdepartmental expectations to maintain adherence to existing schedules for realistic project output.
  • Strong conceptual thinking skills, with the ability to communicate big-picture institutional ideas simply and powerfully through writing and/or visuals.
  • Extensive knowledge and fluency with Mac OS; File Maker; Adobe CS: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, After Effects; Word; collaboration program software; and basic working knowledge of CSS for web is a plus.
  • Extensive knowledge of print and design production: image sizing, retouching, and color; pre-press; and all aspects of large and small format digital and offset printing.
  • Experience working with a creative/design agency. Museum experience preferred.
  • Impeccable written and verbal communication skills across all levels of engagement.
  • The ability to multitask, juggle multiple projects with varying timelines, and work within a fast-paced environment.

The expected base salary range for this role is $115,000 to $118,000. The actual base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
