Job Summary:

The Margaret Herrick Library seeks a qualified Specialist, Collections Care to support preservation and exhibition activities of the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library. The ideal candidate is an energetic, self-motivated, reliable, and detail-oriented individual with the ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team member on multiple time-sensitive tasks. The primary responsibilities will be the preparation of external loans as well as rehousing and collection maintenance of the Library’s holdings.

Responsibilities:

  • Safely handle, mat/frame and install collection material for display and transport using established methods and preservation-quality materials under the supervision of a conservator, registrar and/or archivist.
  • Knowledge of installation procedures and techniques; experience working to install collections following museum industry best practices for collections handling and security; and best practices for packing and crating.
  • Create appropriate preservation-quality housing and supports for collection material in storage and in transit.
  • Transport and handle collection materials safely between departments and buildings employing various methods depending on size, weight and condition of objects.
  • Knowledge of museum standards and best practices as well as understanding of best practices and preservation-quality materials for packing and installing artwork.
  • Assist with the maintenance of vault/storage spaces including general maintenance and cleaning.
  • Candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic office computer skills.
  • Perform other duties as requested and/or required and according to a schedule that might rotate or change to accommodate work demands or staffing variations.
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • High School/GED
  • Preferred: B.F.A or B.A.
  • At least three years’ experience handling art or artifacts in a museum, high-end gallery, or art handling company and demonstrated success in exhibit preparation.
  • License to operate a variety of vehicles.
  • Must have fine motor skills and experience with hand tools and lifting apparatuses.
  • Experience with museum-level art handling practices; knowledge of preservation materials and museum best practices.
  • Must be able to sit, walk, stand, climb stairs and ladders, and lift or push objects up to 50 pounds.

The expected base hourly wage range for this role is $24.00 to $26.00. The actual base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
