Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the director of international affairs, the individual will develop and carry out AFT's international programs as delinated in the annual budget and priotized by the AFT officers.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work independently and with other AFT glonal partners to analyze and synthesize conditions in countries that invite AFT and our leaders to engage.
  • Nurture partnerships with unions in countries and global union federations that AFT is a member, of as well as the AFT U.S. partners at the State Department, ILAB, the Solidarity Center and the AFL CIO International Affairs Department.
  • Prepare AFT officers, national, state and local leaders for all aspects of their international meetings and travel inclusive of all travel logistics, background on country, union and program, talking points and power point presentations, itinerary and emergency information.
  • Work with AFT staff in other departments to bring AFT resources - people and materials - into AFT's international work.
  • Prepare briefing books, situation analysis and decision memos for AFT officers who have an expressed interest in a particular opportunity for AFT international involvement.
  • Draft resolutions and program recommendations based on AFT policies and mission for AFT convention, executive council, Education International and Public Services International.
  • Draft letters for the AFT President to send to U.S. and foreign government and political leaders
  • Assist in the preparation of articles or reports for publication by the AFT.
  • Serve as department representative at meetings and conferences. Assist in the planning of relevant meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding the international, pan-nation and regional interdependent and adversarial relations particularly in Eastern Europe and Eurasian; and the ability to present written and oral analysis.
  • Ability to read, summarize, critique and contextualize foreign policy articles, lectures, press interviews, and conventions.
  • Knowledge of foreign policies and institutions related to to AFT's five divisions and policy resolutions.
  • Deeper policy knowledge Ukraine, eastern Europe and Russia is welcome.
  • Knowledge of broader international labor issues related to artificial intelligence, digital technology and robotis.
  • Writing and editing for publication.
  • Excellent organizational, qualitative and analytical skills, along with the ability to prioritize and manage a range of activities.
  • Experience with Excel, and Microsoft data management platforms and social media platforms such as Instagram, twitter, facebook.
  • Ability to provide communication messages to the President and IAD twitter on time sensitive issues as they develop.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to demonstrate diplomacy, tact and a professional demeanor.
  • Experience working to analyze or advance policy issues at the AFT President, officers and senior management. .
  • A minimum of a master's degree in relevant foreign policy fields.
  • Good communication skills including both written and oral communication.
  • Prior work experience in like union environment.
  • German language skills are considered a plus.
  • Familiarity with AFT and/or its affiliates is considered a plus.

Work Environment:

The work is generally performed in an office environment but requires a moderate amount of international travel.

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit.

 
Position Requirements
  • Demonstrated ability and proven expertise in the production of high-quality print jobs and all copy center media and equipment.
  • Must have driver’s license and excellent driving record.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills.
  • Must have excellent written, telephone, interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and creativity are essential.
  • Good reasoning skills with ability to analyze data and prepare reports.
  • Experience with Quantum Viewing Service.
  • Familiarity with AFT and/or its affiliates is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Océ/Prisma Systems preferred.
  • Familiarity with AFT and/or its affiliates is a plus.

Work Environment The work is generally performed in the copy center; but requires occasional out-of-town travel.
