Job Summary

The Activity/Recreation Assistant supports the efforts of the Activity/Recreation Director in the assessing, selecting, organizing, and implementing of activity/recreational services to address the individualized needs and interests of the overall patient population within the center.

Residents Rights ˇ Knows and respects patients rights ˇ Ensures protected health information is kept confidential ˇ Reports complaints made by patients to supervisor ˇ Reports allegations of patient abuse, neglect and/or misappropriation of patient property Safety and Sanitation ˇ Follows established safety policies and procedures ˇ Observes safety needs of patients as indicated in care plan; participates in restraint reduction program ˇ Follows established infection control precautions and procedures ˇ Wears and/or uses safety equipment and supplies when indicated and properly trained to use ˇ Demonstrates job-specific knowledge of fire and disaster preparedness during drills or actual situations Staff Development ˇ Attends and participates in scheduled in-service training, educational classes and meetings to maintain current certification as managed by regulatory agencies and company policies. ˇ Participates in QAA process ˇ Attends and participates in Circle of Care classes Activity/Recreation Assistant Responsibilities ˇ Assists in the development and delivery of activity/recreational programs to promote the patients' opportunities for engaging in normal life enhancement pursuits and to increase and/or maintain functioning levels. ˇ Maintains precautions/limitations list on each patient. ˇ Encourages patient participation in group and individual activities including arts/crafts, community outings, religious activities, intellectual/educational activities, community/center service activities, recreational activities, etc. ˇ Assists in completing activity documentation, when needed, if trained and in conjunction with regulatory requirements and company policies. ˇ Copies forms for activities, as needed. ˇ Submits supplies list to Activity/Recreation Director and submits receipts for activity expenditures. ˇ Assists Activity/Recreation Director in the organization and supervision of the volunteer program including recruiting and training volunteers. ˇ Assists with Patient Council Meetings when necessary. ˇ Assists in planning community activities that jointly include the community, staff, families and patients. ˇ Assists in the completion of a monthly calendar of available activity/recreational programs and posts it in the center. ˇ Performs any miscellaneous work assignments as may be required.


ˇ High School Diploma with course work in recreation is desirable; Completion of a state approved activity-training course is preferred but not required. Experience ˇ Previous experience in leading recreational activities, arts/crafts, intellectual/educational activities, community outings, etc., desired. Physical Demands ˇ Lifting 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds; Standing, walking, talking, hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, feeling, pushing, fingering, and exerting force to move objects. Travel ˇ 10% Working Conditions ˇ Both inside and outside with some exposure to disagreeable conditions including odor and infection. Principal Contacts ˇ Works closely with patients, family members, volunteers, center staff, and community representatives. General Requirements Must be able to execute the terms and conditions set forth in the HCR ManorCare Employee Handbook, including, but not limited to: a. Works in a safety-conscious manner which ensures that safe work practices are used in order not to pose a risk to self or others in the workplace. Reports any safety violations or hazards to supervisor. b. Complies with company policies and procedures and local, state, and federal regulations c. Adheres to policy on Drug-Free Workplace d. Interacts in a tactful, diplomatic, and humanistic manner with patients, families, visitors, and co-workers to provide a safe, efficient, and therapeutically effective caring environment which ensures the self-respect, personal dignity, rights and physical safety of each patient and facility guest e. Maintains a dependable attendance record and adheres to standards of cleanliness, grooming, hygiene, and dress code. f. ProMedica Senior Care, formerly HCR ManorCare, provides a range of services, including skilled nursing care, assisted living, post-acute medical and rehabilitation care, hospice care, home health care and rehabilitation therapy.

The Activity Assistant will provide daily activity programs for residents and assist the Program Services Coordinator in providing a full range of program services. This position requires tact, sensitivity and professionalism due to constant interaction with residents and families to guarantee their satisfaction. Assist in and deliver program services.

Educational Requirements High School Diploma or GED preferred.  
Position Requirements

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with residents having dementia and appropriate therapeutic/behavioral interventions. Must be able to work as a part of a team. Must successfully complete the required Alzheimer's training.
