Description

Objective:

  • To participate in planning and execution of a wide variety of tasks related to vessel preservation
  • Primary focus of work is Ship and Boat Carpentry related to maintenance, preservation and restoration

Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance and restoration tasks related to watercraft preservation
  • Willingness to perform research necessary to support specific work assignments
  • Work under the instruction of lead shipwrights
  • Perform work in support of other areas of Museum
  • Represent Mystic Seaport Museum in a professional manner at all times

Note:

Because of the broad interests of the Watercraft Preservation and Programs Area and the variety of work expected by the Museum from this area, much work outside the parameters of this job description is to be expected. Within limits set by their supervisor, all Shipyard employees are encouraged to become involved in aspects of Watercraft Preservation and Programs Area which are not normally within the scope of their job description.

 
Position Requirements
  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination and booster by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination will be required.
  • Minimum of two years experience in a variety of ship and boat maintenance, preservation or restoration projects. Time spent in formal Boat Building Programs may replace up to one year of this experience.
  • Complete familiarity with hand and power tools and shop safety as relates to ship and boat carpentry
  • Willingness to work flexible hours in performance of responsibilities
  • Willingness to work weekends on a rotational basis
  • Willingness and ability to work with non-professional shipyard volunteers
  • Ability and willingness to record, log and otherwise document work performed
  • Ability to work unsupervised on assigned tasks and projects
  • Possess a high degree of flexibility regarding scheduling of projects, tasks and responsibilities
  • Job requires bending, lifting, climbing, and prolonged physical activity and exposure to all weather conditions
  • Hold a valid drivers license
  • Hold or be willing to achieve a State Safe Boating Certificate
  • Knowledge and skill in application of traditional marine coatings

Special Skills

  • A high level of aptitude and ability in the following areas:
  • Carpentry as related to traditional watercraft preservation and new construction
  • Research related to watercraft preservation and specific assignments
  • Interest in and the ability to interact and communicate with Museum Visitors related to tasks performed
  • Interest in furthering the broader goals of Mystic Seaport Museum

Morgan, America's oldest commercial ship still in existence.
