Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The United Nations Program Manager will serve as the primary liaison and coordinator for United Church of Christ presence and participation at the United Nations with responsibility for global advocacy within the multilateral framework. The Program Manager will be responsible for collaborative engagement with the World Council of Churches, the World Communion of Reformed Churches, ecumenical and global partners, and other UCC staff in ensuring the programmatic priorities established are met. The Program Manager will ensure UCC participation and representation at UN meetings and will also provide and facilitate training opportunities for UCC members to be effective global advocates living into the vision of a just world for all.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Serve as the United Church of Christ’s primary liaison to the United Nations (UN) for global justice and global advocacy through the United Nations.
  • Create advocacy networks in the UCC inviting participating from key stakeholders and grassroots participants, connecting the local and global advocacy issues.
  • Establish relationships with ecumenical and interfaith partners as well as NGOs to address identified global challenges related to women, environment, migration, Indigenous, and African Descendant peoples as well as intersecting realities with persons with disabilities and emerging issues.
  • Provide leadership in identifying priorities and collaborative strategies for working with staff and key stakeholders in this multilateral context, alerting all relevant UCC staff to emerging issues related to their programmatic interests and commitments.
  • Nurture and coordinate the global advocacy priorities of the United Church of Christ in collaboration with Global Ministries, Global H.O.P.E., Washington, DC staff, and other UCC staff with intersecting programmatic priorities.
  • Collaborate with Global Ministries and Washington, DC based staff in working with global partners on UPR interventions and in bringing critical issues to the attention of Special Rapporteurs and other key individuals in the UN system.
  • Interface with UN staff in Geneva and New York, including Ecumenical Women at the UN.
  • Co-host annual UCC delegation to the Commission on the Status of Women in collaboration with Ecumenical Women at the UN, and Global Ministries Advocacy staff.
  • Network with other ecumenical staff coordinating advocacy at the UN, and with the World Council of Churches staff and programs through CCIA.
  • Maintain and keep Wider Church Ministries ECOSOC membership in UN updated facilitating the need for badges and attendance for individuals requesting attendance at UN events.
  • Know and interpret the General Synod and other bases for global advocacy within the United Church of Christ.
  • Monitor outcomes of UN General Assembly and keep Associate General Minister for Wider Church Ministries informed of meetings, outcomes, statements, etc.
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of an array of programs by which the United Church of Christ can learn about the UN.
  • Identify or create resources and curricula and make them available via the website and other means.
  • Develop and maintain updated content for the UCC at the UN webpage on UCC website.
  • Recruit and supervise volunteers, interns as needed.
  • Other projects and other duties as assigned by supervisor.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

 

  • Graduate (or undergraduate) degree in international studies, or equivalent

related field.

  • Knowledge of UN systems and how they function, as well as experience working with the UN.
  • Thorough and working knowledge of UCC history, polity, and policy related to global issues.
  • Thorough and working knowledge of global justice issues, including the places of intersection and the places of distinction with other justice priorities locally and globally.
  • Good understanding of social media and web technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational and project managements skills.
  • Ability to take direction and follow through on commitments.
  • Self-starter.
  • Desire and sensitivity to working in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission.
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally.

 

LOCATION: This position offers the possibility of deployment or relocation to Cleveland.
