THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA AND REQUIRES THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE TO PERFORM THE JOB ON-SITE AT Ames Research Center, California.

The Bionetics Corporation is seeking a Support Scientist to join our NASA team at the Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Support Scientist conducts biological research associated with one or more complex projects within the NASA Ames Research Center's Biosciences Branch. This position will focus on collecting, propagating, and long-term preservation of microbial isolates. The NASA Biological Institutional Scientific Collection manages microbial material cultured from Space Biology funded missions and research activities.

 
Position Requirements

EDUCATIONAL and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an in biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, or related field of study and 0-2 years’ of professional experience is required.
  • Laboratory experience in microbiology, recombinant DNA technology, spectroscopy, and data analysis.
  • Familiarity with best practices for working with hazardous materials and willingness to adhere to NASA-defined processes.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and web-based bioinformatics tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with scientists and engineers from a wide range of technical backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as analytical problem-solving abilities.
  • Capacity to work independently with minimal instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Position requires U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Establish laboratory facilities to allow for acquiring, storing, inventorying, cataloging, and distribution of new microbial sample collections
  • Prepare and/or propagate biological materials.
  • Perform appropriate microbial authentication/characterization procedures, through biochemical and sequencing methods.
  • Prepare materials for long-term storage and archiving through lyophilization or freezing protocols.
  • Provides input in the development of SOPs and project documentation.
  • Conceive and design laboratory experiments and actively participate in project planning.
  • Generate, record, analyze, and compile experimental data.
  • Complete statistical analysis of spectroscopy and analytical data.
  • Submit data to appropriate public databases.
  • Prepare figures for presentation/publication and collaborate with other scientists in publishing research findings.
  • Present research at scientific conferences.
  • Maintain a safe and organized laboratory area.
  • Perform general laboratory maintenance activities including scheduled waste removal and decontamination of surfaces.
  • Carry out assigned duties in a manner consistent with defined safety policies and report any safety incidents, potential hazards, or close calls. Assist with identifying and eliminating any unsafe conditions.
  • Communicate with vendors as needed to support laboratory purchasing and inventory management, coordinate technical specifications, and obtain price quotes.

  • Occasionally – Squatting/Crouching, Climbing, Kneeling
  • Often – Reaching, Standing, Sitting, Walking, Stooping, Pushing, Pulling, Talking, Hearing, Seeing
  • Lifting/Moving Requirements – Minimum of 25 pounds occasionally
