Description

The Ward Summer Student Research program provides an opportunity to experience a unique interdisciplinary mentorship experience. Successful incumbents will have opportunities to work with their mentor on a research project, attend our Lunch and Learns and participate in the annual Ward Summer Student Research Day where they will have an opportunity to present their findings to the organization and its visitors.

Dr. Sally Lindsay is a Senior Scientist within the Bloorview Research Institute and leads the TRAIL (Transitions and Inclusive Environment) lab. She is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences. Her research focuses on transitions to adulthood and participation and inclusion of youth and young adults with disabilities. The summer student will be involved in ongoing projects within the TRAIL lab including: (1) Enhancing healthy and productive work for youth with disabilities;  (2) ableism and discrimination among youth with disabilities; (3) accessible housing for people with disabilities. The student will assist with recruitment, data collection, data entry, analysis and knowledge translation.
 

 

Compensation Details

The program runs for 12 weeks from May 1, 2023 – July 21, 2023. Students will be paid $15.50 per hour based on a 37.5 hour week (full-time), less statutory deductions, including 4% in lieu of vacation and relevant statutory holiday pay. Students will be paid biweekly through payroll.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with an ongoing lab projects as described
  • Participate in recruitment, data collection, entry, analysis and writing and knowledge translation
  • General administrative and clerical functions to support projects
  • Interaction with clients, families and project staff of the program, and external collaborators as needed
  • Assist in literature searching and preparation of poster presentations
  • Preparation of a presentation for the summer student Research Day
  • Must be available to work for the full 12 weeks of the program
  • Additional duties assigned as required

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 85% or higher
  • Students must be enrolled in a relevant undergraduate degree program aligned with the mission of the TRAIL lab (e.g., health science, sociology, psychology, disability studies)
  • Able to communicate effectively with staff, clients and work collaboratively within an multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to work independently while demonstrating accuracy and attention to detail
  • Able to organize work to ensure deadlines are met and follow-up is complete
  • Has relevant knowledge of software programs (e.g., Microsoft word, PowerPoint, Excel) and willingness to learn other programs as needed
  • Applies data management skills and principles
