Position Summary:

Under general supervision provides network support to operational computer networks in technical maintenance and recovery to local and wide area networks. Uses a variety of testing tools and techniques to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical problems associated with the system's hardware and software. Interface with vendors and maintenance providers to service and maintain network systems support as required.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assembles and configures network components and associated services.
  • Sets up and maintains basic network operations, including assembly of network hardware, and provides assistance to the network administrator.
  • Performs network troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose common network problems.
  • Upgrades network hardware and software components as required; loads software such as operating systems, word processing, and spreadsheet programs into computers.
  • Installs upgrades and configures network printing, directory structures, rights, security, software and files services.
  • Provides users with network technical support.
  • Responds to needs and questions of users concerning their access of network resources.
  • Establishes network users, user environments, directories, and security for networks being installed.
  • Tests network hardware and software, perform routine maintenance, and apply vendor updates to software.
  • Installs or assists PC Technician in installation of hardware and peripheral components such as monitors, keyboards, printers and disk drives.
  • Logs and tracks calls utilizing problem management database, maintain history records and related problem documentation; prepares and analyzes statistics on network utilization and availability.
  • Prepares training materials for computers and provides user support and training in usage of hardware, software, and utilities.
  • Manages performance tuning and capacity planning activities to enhance the performance of the network resources.
  • Conducts product evaluations of upgraded or new hardware and software identifying strengths, weaknesses, and potential benefits to the agency; recommend enhancements to network facilities to network administrator.
  • Performs routine backups and archival of files stored on the network to assist in recovery efforts.
  • Service remote network locations to obtain clarification of problems and to identify solutions or corrective actions.
  • Assists in establishing policies and procedures for use of network facilities.
  • Assists in maintaining the local area network or wide area network, cable and hub installations, and inventories.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O’odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of computer hardware and software installation, troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of uses and limitations of a wide variety of software applications, including spreadsheets, word processing, presentation graphics, desktop publishing, and e-mail/calendar.
  • Knowledge of current computer operating systems; basic local and wide area network systems, including topologies and protocols; research techniques, resources, methods and procedures; cabling practices and techniques;
  • Skill in diagnosing and troubleshooting computer hardware and software end user problems; reading and comprehend computer hardware and software documentation to solve technical problems.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Ability to install and operate a variety of software programs.
  • Ability to maintain existing software programs and computer systems.
  • Ability to operate a variety of highly technical computer and peripheral equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to troubleshoot common hardware and software problems.
  • Ability to meet project deadlines and support new software and hardware in a demanding, multi-tasking environment.
  • Ability to communicate with vendors, users, management, and network administrator.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to effectively troubleshoot journey skill level problems to a resolution.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree in Computer Sciences or closely related field; and four years work experience in supporting end-user networks in a Microsoft environment, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Upon recommendation for hire a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver’s license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O’odham Nation tribal employer’s insurance requirements to receive a driver’s permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department’s needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O’odham Language and English as a condition of employment.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Its four non-contiguous segments total more than 2.8 million acres at an elevation of 2,674 feet.
